Increase in the number of cornea transplants in Papageorgiou in recent days, due to a greater supply of grafts

A sharp increase in the number of corneal transplants has been recorded in the last few days at the Papageorgiou hospital in Thessaloniki, due to the increase in the supply of transplants, which is attributed to the awareness of the society after the donation of the organs of the 21-year-old student, who lost her life due to a drift in the city center.

“In recent days there has been a huge mobilization in organ donation and this is very encouraging. I hope the awareness continues and more donations follow. Together with the corneal transplant of the 21-year-old student and those of the last few days, we have reached 29 corneal transplants since the beginning of the year”, said the director of the Second University Ophthalmology Clinic and the Corneal Transplantation Center Nikolaos Ziakas.

Within four days, three new corneal transplants were successfully performed at the hospital’s Cornea Transplant Center. The most recent transplant took place yesterday (Tuesday, December 13), giving hope to a 73-year-old woman from Xanthi who was experiencing severe vision problems. The first tests after the operation were positive and her health is being monitored by the treating doctors.

They were preceded by a transplant the previous day (Monday 12th December) and another last Saturday (10th December). The recipients, a 72-year-old woman from Thessaloniki and a 62-year-old woman from Skydra, respectively, now hope that their daily life will change immediately after the successful transplant. The transplants came from a 40-year-old, a 54-year-old and a 55-year-old whose organs were donated by their families.
