With eight innovative projects and secured funding of 19.8 million euros, the “digital revolution” is progressing in the Municipality of Athens

The digital transformation of the capital will enter a new era from today, following the approval of the project program submitted by the Municipality of Athens to the Ministry of Digital Governance and which will be financed with an amount of 19.8 million euros from the Recovery Fund.

In total, eight flagship programs designed by the Municipality of Athens through the OTA Computerization and Business Units Development Company (DAEM) and prepared as sub-projects, are included in the technical bulletin approved by the competent ministry, in the context of the Recovery Fund program for financing 17 municipalities of the country with a population of more than 100,000 inhabitants.

The digital works which were submitted by the Municipality of Athens, concern the whole operation of the city and aim to improve the quality of life of residents and professionals in areas such as cleanliness, the operation of school units, policing in the commercial triangle, etc.

Today, at the city hall, the mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis, had business meeting with the Minister of Digital Governance Kyriakos Pierrakakis, in the presence of the Deputy Mayor of Digital Transition and Education of the Municipality of Athens Nikolas Vafiadis.

After the meeting, the Minister of Digital Governance stated: “I had the opportunity to watch the overall work that has been done in the Municipality of Athens for digital transformation, which was really impressive. I would tell you that sometimes, things can be seen reflected in a single point and I would say that the best thing today that the mayor showed us, is this board above his desk, the digital board, the which really shows an image of the city, in a cumulative way and, from what I understand, all these data – from what the mayor also told me – will be opened for all Athenians very soon”.

Mr. Pierrakakis he also pointed out that: “It’s a great job, we’re very happy to be her helpers and we’re sure not going to stop there. There is the “Smart City” program, which we finance for the Municipality of Athens with approximately 20 million euros. The way the master mayor and his associates have designed it is truly innovative. And of course a number of other things that we said together that we will announce when the time is right.”

The mayor of Athens Kostas Bakoyannis, noted: “Athens not only participates in the very large national effort for digital transformation, but also leads the way. We want to build a municipality with more technology and less bureaucracy. We want a municipality that speaks with two “clicks” and says “good morning”. Today we take a very big step with funding for the smart city program. I would also like to publicly say a very big “thank you” to the minister for the excellent cooperation we have developed from the very beginning”, concluded Mr. Bakoyannis.
