Crete: An elderly man is back in court for lewd acts on a 7-year-old girl

He was acquitted at first instance, however, the girl’s parents filed an appeal

He will sit on the bench again 75 years old from the village of Messara, who he was recently found not guilty by a majority by the Mixed Jury Court of Lasithi for the charge of lewd acts against a 7-year-old girl.

The old man, who he had stayed in prison for about five months – he had been released for health reasons – he was declared innocent by a vote of 5-2, while the prosecutor’s proposal was a conviction.

The parents of the minor they applied to the head of the Prosecutor’s Office of Appeals of Eastern Crete for the filing an appeal against the first instance decision which was finally accepted. This means the trial will be restarted from scratch, with the 75-year-old sitting in the dock once again.

Lawyer of the family of 7-year-old Mrs. Marina Panagiotakis, in her written statement about the case, told cretalive: “I have promised the parents and the child that I will fight every battle necessary to reveal the truth at the Court of Appeal. Judges and prosecutors are steadfast guardians of the truth throughout our legal battle. The detailed truth of the little girl cannot give way to the excuse ALL because of a misunderstanding. Silencing one child’s truth will silence other similar victimized children sexual abuse”.

The case had come to light in the summer of 2018 and the pre-trial detention of the old man had “lightning struck” his family members.
