Iman she is a revolutionary when it comes to the issue of aging. The famous model and founder of Iman Cosmetics is comfortable with the changes in her skin and body and is not interested in turning back the clock, as many women in the fashion industry would like.

“I come from Africa, we celebrate old age. A friend of mine was saying that there is an increase in plastic surgery and all this because people are looking at themselves in Zoom meetings,” Iman told British Vogue.

She noted that there’s an obsession with youth and that it’s mostly a Western mentality, and she said with a smile: “If you’re worried about that, just put the camera up so it’s tilted down on your face. For God’s sake! This is really a mindset, rooted in the West. For me, it was never a problem.”

Iman also spoke about her husband David Bowiewho died of cancer in 2016, and how he helped inspire her to start her cosmetics company in 1994.

“He is not my ‘blessed husband.’ He’s my husband,” she told the magazine. I said, ”What if it fails?” And he replied, ”And? If it fails, what do you think will happen? You’re not going to die from it. You know there isn’t a single black model that goes to a job without your foundation in their pocket. That’s a reason to create,’” Iman recalled.

Now, the mother and grandmother is focusing on her family, having retired from modeling in 1989. “I can’t really wear heels anymore. I know my limits,” he joked.

In her interview, Iman also addressed the racism she experienced in the fashion industry, especially in the early days of her career. “The reason a lot of racist things happen in our industry is because there are no non-white people in decision-making positions. These people exist. So this idea that we’re asking for a seat at the table … I’m done with the seat at the table. Let’s dismantle the whole table,” he declared.

Iman is an executive producer on “Supreme Models,” a new documentary series on YouTube that explores the influence of black models in the fashion world.
