Criminal investigation also in Greece for MEP Eva Kaili was ordered by the Financial Prosecutor’s Office, giving the investigations a Greek aspect. The investigation was ordered by the head of the Economic Prosecutor’s Office, appeals prosecutor Christos Bardakis, with the object of crimes such as money laundering and bribery. The financial prosecutor has already requested immediate cooperation with the Belgian authorities in order to have a complete picture of the content of the file that has been formed there.

The criminal preliminary investigation in Greece on the merits it will concern acts and offenses for which the Belgian authorities have not already taken actionas the principle of double jeopardy applies, as it is called in law, where a citizen cannot be criminally prosecuted twice for the exact same thing.

However, based on the financial prosecutor’s motion for an investigation in Greece, the criminal preliminary will move to the acquisition of assets from the MEP and the thorough control of every economic activity.

Besides, since the beginning of the week, Anti-Money Laundering Authority, headed by the honorary deputy prosecutor of the Supreme Court Charalambos Vourliotis, has moved immediately with a generalized seizure of every asset of the MEP, her partner and her immediate relatives.
A thorough check is already being carried out in all credit institutions to find and investigate accounts, transactions, safe deposit boxes or other financial products, as well as in land registry offices for real estate, etc.

The investigation of the Economic Prosecutor’s Office will be carried out by two assistant prosecutors of Mr. Bardakis.
