With his favorite hat, a pack of cigarettes and to the sounds of trap music he loved, 16-year-old Roma Kostas Fragoulis, who was shot by a policeman during a chase, was led earlier to his last residence, in the Evosmos cemeteries.

In an endless procession of grief, the Roma of the settlement “Agia Sofia” where the teenager lived, accompanied the hearse to the cemeteries with dozens of cars and loud music.

There were hundreds of people who showered the coffin with white flowers until it entered the holy Church of the Grand Commanders for the funeral service to be chanted and then accompanied the procession to the adjacent cemeteries.

In the van leading the procession, the 16-year-old’s dear friends were perched on the cart, playing loudly the songs they heard together in life for a final farewell.

Full of pain and suffering, his young partner followed, with whom they had also had a child.

“When a young person is lost, society loses”

The assurance that the government will support the family was given by the general secretary of solidarity of the Ministry of Labor, Giorgos Stamatis, who attended the funeral, asking “all together, let’s break the ghetto that creates social exclusion”.

“Justice decides, we respect its decisions and when a young person loses, society loses,” said Mr. Stamatis.

“We want justice and an apology from the prime minister to this family to calm spirits. I am asking you to stop the story of a child being killed every year by police fire, who are responsible for protecting us and not killing us”, said, for his part, the president of the Panhellenic Union of Gypsies and artist Vassilis Paiteris.

“We are Greeks and we demand from all of Greece and politicians to respect us because we are taxed, we also vote and the time of votes is coming and they will need ours too”, added Mr. Paiteris.

We are all Roma

For the lawyer of the Fragoulis family, Theofilos Alexopoulos, the death of Kostas can only bring unity. “We say goodbye to Kostas Frangoulis, a 16-year-old child who died so unfairly. We are here to sympathize with the family and share their grief, but we are also for another reason, not only us but also the whole world who came to say goodbye to Kostas, to give a message of unity against voices with dangerous crowns they try to divide. We declare today that we are all united, we are all together, we are all Roma”.
