THE sexual violence is a serious global problem that profoundly affects individual and public health, affects millions of people every year and the numbers underestimate the problem because many cases go unreported, he emphasized at an event held at AUTH tonight.
Eleni Zagelidou, Medical Examiner-Head of the Medical Forensic Service of Thessaloniki, mentioned, among other things, the difficulties that exist in proving sexual abuse medically and it is important – she added – that the examination of the victim after the complaint should not be far from the incident, otherwise they are lost. She argued that violence is gendered and out of the ten incidents that the competent authorities are asked to examine, seven concern women. He referred to the difficulties faced by the victims in order to report the incidents of violence and to the process required to draw up the complete forensic report.
Loukas Athanasiadis, Professor of Psychiatry-Psychosexuality, Department of Medicine, AUTH, referred to sexual violence at a global level and pointed out that it is everywhereits consequences for the victims are not only physical but also mental (depression, anxiety and suicidal tendencies). He added that prevention, information, education, therapeutic intervention policies are needed to deal with sexual violence.
Paraskevi Tatsiopoulou, Assistant Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Department of Medicine, AUTH, pointed out that when it comes to sexual abuse of children, the vast majority of abusers come from the narrow family, relative or friendly environment child’s. He added that the absence of witnesses makes it difficult to prove the incident and few incidents may reach the authorities.
The event on “Sexual Violence” was organized by the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Health Sciences, AUTH, which established the “Gender Equality and Anti-Discrimination Committee”.
The Rector of AUTH, Professor Nikolaos Papaioannou, opened the event. The event was welcomed by the Dean of the School of Health Sciences, AUTH, Professor Theodoros I. Dardavesis, Professor Dimitra Kogidou, President of the “Gender Equality and Anti-Discrimination Committee”.
