The announcement in detail

“Three Parthenon fragments are returned from the Vatican to Athens

The Ministry of Culture and Sports welcomes the decision of Pope Francis, which was announced by the Vatican, for the return to Greece of the three fragments from the frieze and metope of the Parthenon – which were kept, since the 19th century, in the valuable collections of the Museums of the Vatican.

Following the request of the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, His Holiness Pope Francis was pleased to return the fragments from the Parthenon Sculptures through the ecclesiastical Authority of Greece.

In the “donation” of Pope Francis, which is made to Archbishop Hieronymos, the spiritual and friendly character of the papal gesture towards the Orthodox Church of Greece is emphasized.

The gratitude of the Ministry of Culture and Sports and personally of the Minister of Culture and Sports Linas Mendonis, for the generous decision of Pope Francis is expressed.

This decision comes as an aid to the diligent effort made by the Greek Government and Kyriakos Mitsotakis personally, since July 2019, for the return of the Parthenon Sculptures from the British Museum and their reunification with those exhibited in the Acropolis Museum”.
