“The decision of the European court on parliamentary immunity is very important,” emphasized Mrs. Bakoyannis, who also referred to the Turkish provocation
Four years after the personal attack with harsh descriptions she received in 2018 from Panos Kammenos, Mrs. Dora Bakoyannis was vindicated yesterday in a European court, which condemned Greece for not lifting the immunity of the then Minister of Defense.
“This decision is very important because as you know For many years I have been fighting the issue of immunity. Because the image of the political system of us politicians hiding behind our immunity for any crimes, whether you are a member of parliament or a minister, that have nothing to do with the exercise of your duties, but you use it to avoid justice, is a huge problem.
»And it actually diminishes us. Why do people sit and tell you, if a minister curses me, I can’t do anything to him, while if I curse him, he will take me to justice,” initially stressed Mrs. Bakoyannis and added:
“The current use of immunity sends completely wrong messages and helps the climate of questioning the policy. This decision changes that. Greece was condemned for this, not Mr. Kammenos.
»Mr. Kammenos hid behind his immunity. And he didn’t join the lawsuit I filed against him. The decision of the European court was based on this, that Greece was wrong not to waive the immunity of Mr. Kammenos.
This means that there is now European court case law which cannot be disputed in Greece. So from now on the ministers will be held accountable, from the time they have committed an offense that does not fall under their ministerial duties.
This decision is very important. This Europe, this European court of human rights which is the last resort of a man to find his right, even if slowly, hears these cases and its jurisprudence is too important to implement.
Mr. Kammenos was never vindicated, I have the right to go to justice again, which I will consider because I have no intention of proceeding with a vendetta with him.
For me, the problem was not Kammenos, but immunity. Immunity is something that has harmed us all and that is why I am completely satisfied with this decision because it means that we are all equal before the law” write down.
Referred to to Turkish provocation, Mrs. Bakoyanni noted that: I told you that the challenge from Turkey will continue. It’s a tension we’re watching.
“Turkey is wronging itself with what it says. Why was it possible for Mrs. Menendes, based on what Turkey says, to come out and make use of these statements and be a catapult against Turkey.
This internationally creates a climate of questioning of the Turkish political leadership and Turkish arguments. Erdogan hopes this will build a rally for him. He’d rather make headlines about the islands or Tayfun than the accuracy.”
