James Cameron to Matt Damon: Get over turning down ‘Avatar’ role

In an earlier interview, Damon revealed that he turned down a role in ‘Avatar’ despite Cameron offering him a high salary and 10% of the film’s box office profits.

James Cameron he says to Matt Damon to “get over” the guilt he feels over turning down a role in 2009’s Avatar.

In an interview given by the director on BBC radio, on the occasion of its release “Avatar: The Way of Water”, was asked about the rejection he received from Damon and replied with a laugh, “He criticizes himself for it. I really think “Matt you are one of the biggest movie stars in the world, get over it”. But he had to make another ‘Bourne’ movie and there was nothing we could do about it. So he had to refuse it unfortunately.”

In an earlier interview, Damon had revealed that he turned down a role in “Avatar”, even though the Cameron had offered him a high fee, but also 10% of the film’s box office earnings. “I’ll go down in history,” Damon declared. “You’ll never meet an actor who turned down more money,” he added.

Cameron was then asked if Damon could have a role in one of the future ‘Avatar’ films, with the director replying: ‘I have to. We have to do it so that the world can find its balance again. But he won’t get 10%.”
