$600,000 from global sales of Pfizer CEO’s book “Moonshot” will be donated to 10 institutions and organizations in Thessaloniki

An amount of 600,000 dollars from the worldwide sales of Albert Bourla’s book, “Moonshot”, will be allocated to 10 institutions in Thessaloniki in memory of his mother, as the CEO of Pfizer himself announced today.

Burla said that his mother Sara sometimes worked voluntarily in social institutions of Thessaloniki, offering in personal work what she could not give in money.

“He didn’t have the financial means to offer money, but he had the kind soul to want to help and go to help, working in these institutions many times” recalled the CEO of Pfizer, who following in his mother’s footsteps, found himself in Thessaloniki , to offer his own way of supporting 10 institutions in the city, most of which he grew up “knowing and hearing about.”

In fact, Thessaloniki will be the first city in the world to receive support from the proceeds of the book, which has been translated into 16 languages and in which he describes his own perspective on the events of the pandemic and the struggle to develop vaccine to combat Covid-19.

It will also be the biggest recipient of the “Moonshot” revenue, a term that translates to “very high ball” in Greek (other cities around the world will also benefit from the revenue).

The 10 institutions and bodies to which the 600,000 dollars will be distributed are:

*The “Melissa” Girls’ Orphanage, with 25 beneficiary girls, mostly teenagers. The orphanage was represented by the president, Argyro Stoila, who pointed out that the donation will be used to continue and expand the cooperation with the girls’ psychological support group.

*The Greek Children’s Village in Filiros, with 51 beneficiaries, which was represented by the president, Elizabeth Paraschou, who announced that the donation money will be directed to the reopening of one of the houses in the village, which will accommodate six children (and will be recruitment of two carers).

*The Society of Spastics of Northern Greece with 108 beneficiaries, represented by the president, Manthos Mastoridis, who emphasized that the money from the donation – combined with parents’ contributions and agency resources – will be used for the gradual implementation of a housing program on a plot of land granted from the municipality.

-The Center for Special Education, with 81 beneficiaries, represented by the president, Marina Panagiotou, who pointed out that the organization’s goal is to create a Supported Living Shelter (SYD) and the donation helps make the big leap in this direction.

-The Society for the Rehabilitation of Persons with Special Needs “O Sotir”, with 209 beneficiaries, represented by the president Ourania Liakopoulou. Ms. Liakopoulou pointed out that the money will be used for the inclusion of seven new residents in the institution’s roof in New Kallikrateia Halkidiki and for the equipment and partial renovation of the SYD.

-SYZOI/Association of People with Visual Impairments and Additional Disabilities, with 22 beneficiaries, represented by the president, Nikolaos Kazantzidis, who noted that the donation will be used to continue, for one year, the organization’s multisensory programs for children and for their expansion and improvement.

The nursing home plans to bring the children closer to the elderly, through – among other things – the creation of traffic education parks, where the former will drive special vehicles and the latter will have the role of … traffic policeman.

-The Philanthropic Foundation- “Saul Modiano” Nursing Home, licensed for 50 elderly people, represented by president Samuel Abastado. The donation will be used to cover the operational costs of the institution and in particular non-flexible costs, such as medicine, feeding and heating, but also for renovations.

During his greeting at the event, the Deputy Minister of the Interior (Macedonia-Thrace), Stavros Kalafatis, made a special mention of the fact that Albert Bourla does not forget his roots and Thessaloniki, which he has in his heart, while he characterized the CEO of Pfizer as one of the people who aim at the collective good.

The governor of Central Macedonia, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, pointed out that ‘Albert Bourla has returned a piece of his soul back to the city from which he started, both through the creation of the Pfizer Digital Innovation Center (CDI) in Thessaloniki, and through the allocation of revenue from his book and with dozens of other movements, which are not widely known. He expressed the assessment that Albert Bjorla’s decision to create the CDI in Thessaloniki may have started as a “movement of the soul”, but in the next three-four years it will prove to be a very smart business move.

The mayor of Thessaloniki, Konstantinos Zervas, mentioned Pfizer’s contribution both to attracting more large companies to the city and to fighting the pandemic through the creation of the vaccine.
