This is a new project with a total investment cost of 64.2 million euros
The “Construction and Operation of Student Centers and Educational Amphitheaters of the University of Western Attica and Places of Culture through PPP” was approved by the Interministerial Committee, which met under the chairmanship of the Deputy Minister of Development and Investments, responsible for Public-Private Partnerships, Nikos Papathanasis.
As stated in the announcement of the Ministry of Development and Investments, this is a new PPP project with a total investment cost of 64.2 million euros and the partnership concerns the study, financing, construction, operation and maintenance as well as the guarding and cleaning services of the new student residences of the University of West Attica and other building facilities, such as the Cultural Center of the Municipality of Phylis.
In particular, the construction of student residences, 1,100 beds, for the University of Western Attica, in the area of Ano and Kato Limni of the Municipality of Fyli and two small auditoriums with a capacity of 160 seats, is planned. In addition, the construction of the new Cultural Center of the Municipality of Phyli is planned.
The project is expected to upgrade the quality of the students’ educational experience as the University of Western Attica, despite being the third largest University Institution in the country, does not have privately owned residences for the free accommodation of students. Beyond the housing gaps, the building infrastructure in question will also cover the need to feed those who meet the criteria. The student residences in combination with the construction of the new Cultural Center of the Municipality of Fylis are expected to have a catalytic effect on the wider area, where significant problems of abandonment, lawlessness and decline are currently observed.
The Minister of Development and Investments Adonis Georgiadis said:
“Just before saying goodbye to 2022, we gave the green light for the approval of another PPP project with a total investment cost of 64.2 million euros, in the municipality of Fylis. A major project concerning the construction of student residences and educational auditoriums at the University of Western Attica, the 3rd largest University Institution in the country, as well as the construction of the new Cultural Center of the Municipality of Fylis. We remain committed to our commitments to improve the daily lives of our fellow citizens not with words but with deeds. We continue strong in 2023.”
The president of DESDIT, Deputy Minister of Development and Investments Nikos Papathanasis, said in this regard:
“Today we proceeded with the approval of another PPP project, hopefully reaching the 31 approved under the New Democracy Government. The construction of student residences for the University of Western Attica, with the excellent cooperation of the Mayor of Phylis, Mr. Pappous, is a visionary project that will upgrade the quality of housing and the educational experience of the students at PA.D.A.. At the same time, the operation of the of student residences will form the core of the modernization of the cultural and residential environment of the Municipality of Fylis. The upgrading of education and the essential support of the youth are a key priority of the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis. In Greece, during the last three and a half years of our government, a strong program of implementing PPP projects has been progressing, which create important, for the country, infrastructures and certify the development leap that is underway. Thanks to this, Greece is internationally recognized as a country with one of the best frameworks for tendering and implementing PPP projects.”
The Minister of Education, Niki Kerameos, stated:
“With the launch of new projects to support student accommodation, with a total investment cost of 64.2 million euros, we confirm the consistent policy of the government as expressed by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Thessaloniki International Fair with the increase of the student allowance. We implement a tripartite commitment to:
* The support of the University of Western Attica with an emblematic project both for PADA and for the Municipality of Fylis, which will contribute to the revitalization, quality upgrade and transformation of the wider area into a space with new educational, social, cultural and environmental possibilities for its students and residents.
* Ensuring the creation of high-level infrastructure in student residences, a student restaurant and educational auditoriums that will be available for PADA beneficiaries, and which for the first time will be able to have privately owned residences.
* The holistic approach to upgrading higher education in the country, both through an appropriate institutional and administrative framework and a set of important tools and actions that strengthen autonomy, innovation and extroversion, as well as through infrastructures that facilitate the acquisition of a rich educational experience”.
