Bio-waste of domestic origin produced within the boundaries of the municipality, will be directed to a separate collection network and will be transported to EMAK ‘Ano Liosion for composting.

The Municipality of Saronikos will implement a new waste management policy in the new year. From February 15 to December 31, the program of separate sorting of bio-waste in brown bins will operate, with a total cost of 1,628,275 euros.

Bio-waste of domestic origin produced within the boundaries of the municipality, will be directed to a separate collection network and will be transported to EMAK ‘Ano Liosion for composting.

To achieve the goal, a household composting network is created, which is based on the supply of houses with special bins, but also on the supply of the municipality with a shredder for shredding collected waste.

Specifically, the program is implemented with the following sub-projects:

1. The 1st sub-project concerns the supply of collection bins and related sorting equipment at the source of bio-waste from the houses of the municipality, as well as household composting. In particular, for the separate collection network, provision is made for:

– 5,000 10lt kitchen bins

– 580 two-wheel buckets 240lt

– 50 four-wheel buckets 660lt

– 350,000 compostable 10lt bags

– 400 100lt composting bins

– 350 composting bins 300-400lt for the home composting network

2. The 2nd sub-project concerns the supply of two 16 m2 press-type garbage trucks. for the collection and transport of bio-waste at EMAK ‘Ano Liosion.

3. The 3rd sub-project concerns the supply of a green waste shredder, for shredding the collected branches.

4. The 4th sub-project concerns actions to inform and raise awareness of the citizens about the separate management of bio-waste, so that there is proper and effective participation.

“We defend the decentralized management of waste in the municipality, with the main axis being the sorting of the separate streams at the source,” said the mayor of Saronikos, Petros Filippou, and added: “By creating a separate bio-waste management stream, we drastically reduce the amount of waste going to landfills, we contribute in the development of the circular economy and consequently we become part of the solution for sustainable development of our cities. We are optimistic that together with the residents we will build a cleaner municipality”.
