The truck traffic ban is in effect
Both the personnel and the means of the Hellenic Police, mainly the Traffic Police Services, are on increased operational readiness since the morning due to the departure of the Christmas excursions, which are expected to peak today.
In this context, patrol cars, motorcycles and conventional vehicles have been made available, with the corresponding personnel and equipment for the effective policing of the country’s road network.
EL.AS has implemented since yesterday (23/12) a series of increased road safety measures with the aim of the safe movement of citizens and the prevention of traffic accidents.
The planning of the measures was carried out by the Traffic Policing Directorate of the Hellenic Police Headquarters and includes the basic directions for the development of the measures throughout the country’s road network, as well as individual interventions, based on local problems and special traffic conditions that prevail, by wider area or region.
The measures in place include:
- Policing of the road network by sector, based on the particular traffic conditions of each region.
- Increased police presence and targeted policing at the points of the road network, where there is a frequency of traffic accidents.
- Increased traffic measures at the entrances and exits of large urban centers, where heavy vehicle traffic is observed.
- Regulation of traffic with pedestrian traffic controllers, at key intersections, to avoid traffic congestion.
- Establishment of general and special traffic control teams, focusing attention on the verification of dangerous violations (excessive speed, driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal overtaking, etc.), as well as violations that, based on statistical data, are responsible for causing serious traffic accidents (use mobile phones while driving).
- Increased traffic measures in places where there is a mass gathering of passengers (airports, ports, stations, etc.)
- Local traffic arrangements, in which festive events will take place.
- Presence of traffic wardens at the Toll Stations of the Country to facilitate traffic, inform and advise drivers and passengers.
- Informing the citizens through the Communication Services, in any case where it becomes necessary to inform the public widely about the existence of any traffic and other problems.
At the same time, particular importance is given to the preventive and deterrent presence, through the implementation of traffic checks and drunkenness tests (alcohol tests) in order to deal with “dangerous” violations, which are the main causes, mainly of fatal traffic accidents.
In addition, in addition to the above measures and for the safer movement of vehicles and the improvement of road traffic, a traffic ban applies to the exit stream from 08:00 in the morning to 13:00 today for all lorries with a maximum permissible weight of more than 3 .5 tons.
Finally, ELAS appeals to drivers:
– to be informed about the weather and the condition of the road network,
– be especially careful when driving,
– faithfully follow the provisions of the Road Traffic Code,
– drive at low speeds to better control their vehicle,
– in any case to comply with the instructions of the traffic police.
