The maintenance and technical inspection works on the flagship are in full progress Calatrava shelter of its Central Stadium OAKAas part of a wider program of restoration and upgrading of the facilities of the Olympic Sports Center.
The intervention is part of the strategy of utilization and sustainable management of its infrastructure OAKAis implemented with funding from Recovery and Resilience Fundand is carried out in collaboration with Super fund.
The project is part of a total investment exceeding 150 million euroswith the aim of upgrading functionality, strengthening security and maintaining, over time, the largest and most historic sports complex of the country.
In detail:
“Inspection and Maintenance of Bolted Connections in the Northeast Upper Arch of the Calatrava Roof of the Central Stadium
In the northeast upper arch of the roof of the Central Stadium of the OAKA, control and maintenance work is being carried out on the screw connections, with the aim of ensuring the static adequacy, long-term durability and overall functionality of the metal structure.
First, a visual and mechanical inspection of all bolts, nuts and washers is carried out, in order to detect possible loosening, damage or corrosion. Where loosening is found, re-tightening torque is applied with a torque wrench, according to the specifications of the European regulations EN 14399 and EN 1090-2, depending on the size, quality and type of the screw.
After each tightening, the neighboring bolts are checked for possible loosening, and the process is repeated until all connections are in compliance. In cases of worn or damaged screws, they are replaced with new elements of the same diameter and quality, with full application of anti-corrosion protection.
This is followed by a cleaning of the metal surfaces of the connections to PSt2 grade (according to ISO 8501-1) and then a corrosion protection and repainting system is applied, according to the ISO 12944 standard, suitable for the external environmental conditions of exposure of the roof.
At the same time, water blasting works have started on the main body of the “Calatrava” roof. The process includes high pressure water jetting (Ultra High Pressure Water Jetting) with a pressure of up to 2,500 bar, for the complete removal of old coatings, oxidations and contaminants from metal surfaces.
This method ensures mechanical cleaning without surface damage, maintaining the integrity of the steel and creating the appropriate adhesion surface for the next repainting phase. After water-blasting, a multi-layered high-resistance paint system is applied, with anti-corrosive and oil-repellent characteristics, which meets the climatic and environmental requirements of the area.
The process is carried out in sections, with full safety and height access measures, through special scaffolding and climbing systems, under the constant supervision of engineers and specialized workshops.
The above works are part of an integrated control, restoration and maintenance program of the Calatrava Mortgage, which is implemented with funding from the Recovery and Resilience Fund, in collaboration with the Super Fund (EESYP).
The project is part of the wider program of upgrading the facilities of the OAKA, with a total budget of more than 150 million euros, which aims to ensure the sustainability, safety and modern functionality of the largest sports center in the country”.
