Bucharest: The Romanian media write about a “passage of death” – Seven similar traffic accidents in 3 months

“The fact that at least 7 professional drivers made the same mistake in three months clearly says that the problem is not the drivers, but something else” writes the Romanian Republica

The tragic accident with the Greek bus in Bucharest – which claimed the life of a 53-year-old man and injured at least 25 – continues to be mentioned in the Romanian media today, as in the country the spot is known as carniola, while a political confrontation has also broken out over the fact.

The tour bus driver tested negative for alcohol and drugs, while passengers claim he was not driving.

On the contrary, since September when this particular tunnel was delivered, there have been similar traffic accidents at the point with the iron warning bar 7, with the last one unfortunately also being fatal.

According to Romania’s Republica, in all seven cases, vehicles over 3.5 meters high hit or “stuck” on the overpass at Union Passage.

In all cases, the vehicles were driven by professional drivers – who passed all the necessary checks and tests and observed the rest periods prescribed by their companies.

“The fact that at least 7 professional drivers, from 3 different countries (Romania, Turkey and Greece) committed the same mistake, in the same place, in just three months, clearly says that the problem is not the drivers, but something else. But which one?’ writes the newspaper’s website in an article.

The editor reports that all 7 professional drivers ignored the height restriction sign at the tunnel entrance. This means that the problem is related to the road structure and signalling.

Also, the promotor website cites statements from the president of Romania’s USR party, Catalin Drula, who accused the authorities involved in the accident of lying that the bus hit the chains of the height limiter.

“Video has been released showing that the tour bus passed the Pasajul Unirii warning chains in lane 2 (of 4) and then changed lanes to the left. (…) At the same time, in a photo taken today one can see how the warning chains are upside down in the width of lane 3.

Some conclusions are drawn: Prefect Grebla and other officials who said the warning chains were struck lied, it is wrong. As I have said before, you should not be able to bypass them if you enter the lane (solutions can be found, from the location closer to the crossing, to the previous physical demarcation of the directions through the lane),” it said on Facebook.

“the chains have also been hit by other trucks or coaches as seen in the picture and have been left that way. In practice, there is no maintenance and reactivation of this security feature. Consequently, (…) even if it passed in lane 3, under the chains, it is very likely that they would not have hit the bus because they had already been hit in the past,” said Drula.
