The population of wolves in Greece is increasing

by

The phenomenon of wolves appearing in populated areas, according to scientists, is only rare and cannot be characterized in recent years.

For three dead wolves within three months in the prefecture of Drama, the Hunting Association of Drama speaks with its post. The last incident, as he mentions, was detected by residents of the village of Doxato and collected by the dean of the association Chrysi Vargia and the game warden Fotis Papadopoulos.

According to the Drama Hunting Association, the pile was found in a residential area, on a road with heavy vehicle traffic but also with frequent pedestrian crossings, and will be handed over to the veterinary service to be tested for rabies and other diseases.

The wolf population increased significantly

The phenomenon of wolves appearing in populated areas, according to scientists, is only rare and cannot be characterized in recent years.

This happens as with the appearance of more and more prey, the wolf, which is also a protected species, finds favorable conditions to reproduce, expanding its presence in more areas.

As Periklis Birtsas, Professor of Wildlife Biology at the University of Thessaly and special advisor to the Hunting Federation of Macedonia Thrace, explains to grtimes.gr, the wolf as a predator is a species that depends on its prey, its prey, which in Greece are among of others, wild boars, roe deer, livestock, etc.

“As the population of mainly wild animals, such as wild boars – whose population is on the rise – increases, so will the wolf population,” he says, stressing that it may be a protected species, however, as is the case all over the world, when some species create problems, then the authorities proceed with population management which is determined by experts and the state, through a specific process.

According to Mr. Birtsa, the wolf population has been shown to follow the spread of its prey and for this reason it passed to the Peloponnese where the wild boar increased, passed to Parnitha, where the deer increased, etc.

In some cases and when problems arise, according to the Biology professor, man must intervene and manage populations and while no species in nature is undesirable, “at a given time and in a specific place a species can become undesirable that at the time in that place because it does specific damage”.

The problems caused by wolves in Greece

Mr. Birtsas points out that there is damage to flocks and attacks on dogs, whether pets or hunting dogs, even sheepdogs. “Of course, there are many cases where we find half-eaten wild boars or deer or anything else in the mountains, but the problem that is created for humans is with attacks on herds and dogs mainly.”

The professor also says that after the placement of transmitters, it has been proven that wolves are very close to humans, often without their presence being noticed. “That is, it can be close 50, 100 meters and the person is walking, for example, on a path. You will never see him, he never harms humans except in exceptional cases, but despite this, in Kozani, Kryoneri, Parnitha and other regions of Greece (where investigations have been carried out) there are records of wolves very close to humans,” he underlines.

In conclusion, he states that the incidents of human-wolf interaction have increased enormously in recent years and that this is an indication that their population in Greece is prospering.
