“The government has the will to put an end to this multi-year pending situation”, said the Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports Nikolas Giatromanolakis

The recent Presidential Decree of the Ministry of the Interior was the occasion to start intensive discussions about artistic education. Today at noon, the Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports Nikolas Giatromanolakis, together with the General Secretary of Human Resources for the Public Sector, Vivi Charalambogianni and the General Secretary of Vocational Education, Training and Lifelong Learning and Youth of the Ministry of Education and Religion, George Voutsinos and the General Secretary of Contemporary Culture of the YPPOA, Eleni Doundoulakis, met with representatives of the Greek Actors’ Association, the Panhellenic Federation of Theama Akroamas and artistic associations, in order to make it clear that the PD does not modify the current regime regarding the degrees of the artists.

As stated, after the end of the meeting, the Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports, responsible for issues of modern culture, Nikolas Giatromanolakis, “We met today with representatives of the artistic unions, FOTHA of SEH and other representatives of the sector, in a discussion with three Ministries present: the Ministry of the Interior represented by the General Secretary of Human Resources for the Public Sector, Vivi Charalambogianni, and the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, represented by the General Secretary of Vocational Education, Training and Lifelong Learning and Youth, Giorgos Voutsinos, and the Ministry of Culture and Sports.

First of all, and because unfortunately there is a lot of misinformation on the subject, which understandably has upset artists and public opinion, we want to make it clear once again that the Presidential Decree does not equate drama school degrees with a high school diploma , End of story. PD caused absolutely no change in this status. None. What was true before is still true today, and it was also true for SYRIZA.

In addition, the PD does not concern recruitment of the Ministry. Education and, very importantly, it does not concern recruitment of artists in the public sector, because they are excluded from ASEP anyway.

Therefore the Presidential Decree:
• does not equate drama school diplomas with high school diplomas
• does not concern at all recruitment of drama school graduates as actors in the State and in supervised bodies
• does not involve any recruitment of drama school graduates as teachers in schools
• does not involve recruitment of drama school graduates in the private sector at all
Likewise for the dance industry.

The unions were asked for written comments on the DP, so that any technical issues could be examined and clarified immediately by the Ministry of the Interior.

However, on the occasion of this issue, a discussion was provoked in the public debate which is extremely useful, because it gives visibility to the very important issue of the grading of art education schools. Recognizing the very serious and unresolved for decades issue of the grading and quality of artistic education, the co-competent Ministries are in consultation in order to find a solution, something that is happening for the first time.

And the issue is not only about drama schools and their great tradition: Conservatories are the backbone of our country’s musical education, dance schools are the nursery from which our next great dancers will emerge. We respect their contribution to the artistic education of our country and this should be reflected in the way they operate in relation to the rest of the Greek education system.

The present government, recognizing the decades-long demands of artists, immediately opens this difficult issue, as it dared to do for the protection of the labor and insurance rights of artists, the tax issues of culture and many others.

The government has the will to put an end to this multi-year pending so that there is an “academic corridor” connecting the schools of art education with our universities and, most importantly: To shape the framework, criteria and conditions that will make university-level artistic education possible over time”.
