The historical site of Souli (Tetrachorio and Castle of Kiafa) is a proclaimed – demarcated archaeological site
The Ministry of Culture and Sports promotes the implementation of an integrated strategic plan for the restoration and promotion of the historical area of Souli. The framework of the principles is formulated in the Strategic Plan (masterplan), which will form the basis for the preparation of the necessary studies for the restoration and promotion of historical monuments, as well as the wider archaeological area.
The historical site of Souli (Tetrachorio and Castle of Kiafa) is a declared – demarcated archaeological site.
As stated by the Minister of Culture and Sports, Lina Mendoni, “The area of Souli has important topographical, spatial and anthroposocial characteristics of high historical, cultural and political identity. Our goal is to create a sustainable community and highlight the special natural, historical and cultural character of the place, through the protection and promotion of the broader cultural landscape of the Tetrahorion of Souli, the natural and built environment, the material and the intangible heritage”.
Souli is the current entrance to Tetrahori and is the most historically charged settlement. As a settlement one can perceive a small, newer part of it. The Castle of Caiaphas is completely abandoned. 28 “Souliotian” residences, Zerva House, “School”, the Church of Saints Constantine and Helen are identified.
In Avarikos, the approach is difficult, through an impassable dirt road. 23 historic residential buildings and the churches of Agios Spyridon and Agios Dimitrios are identified. Samoniva has a different character from the rest of the Tetrahori settlements, as there are newer buildings due to its continuous habitation since 1932. 19 houses, a school, a church and livestock facilities are recorded.
Souli was inhabited by the Souliot families, until the time of their definitive expulsion by the Ottomans (1822), when the settlements were abandoned and destroyed. Only Samoniva was repopulated from 1825, exclusively by livestock farmers. The historical site of Souli (Tetrachorio and Castle of Kiafa) is a declared – demarcated archaeological site. In 1956, the Ministry of Culture declared the “ruins of Souli, the Fortress of Ali Pasha (Kiafas Castle) and the Bridge of Dalla, in Samoniva, as historical monuments.
The main residential core of Tetrahorio developed gradually around the end of the 17th century. The settlements developed successively: Souli, Samoniva, Kiafa and Avarikos. The larger area of Souli is complemented by a group of seven other settlements that make up Eptachori, indirectly connected to the historicity of the area. The mountainous landscape of the entire area, rugged, “Doric”, is particularly imposing, which immediately presents to the connoisseur of history the strong impression of the direct interdependence of the historical “becoming” and the natural environment.
