Particularly long lasting – Three aftershocks of magnitude 2.3 – 2.8 and 3.4 have followed
A strong earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale occurred at 14:24 with an epicenter 5 km east of Psachni in Evia, according to the Geodynamic Institute of Athens.
The earthquake was superficial as the focal weight is estimated at 13.2 kilometers and was particularly felt in Attica.
So far there have been no reports of damage, however, as the governor of Central Greece told Fanis Spanosthe picture will be clear in a little while, as there are at least twenty villages around the epicenter.
Since that time, three aftershocks of magnitude 2.3 – 2.6 and 3.4 have followed.
According with the mayor of Dirfyon Messapia, Giorgos Psathas who spoke to SKAI the “earthquake was intense. The focus is north of Chalkida in the area of Pissonas, a local community with old houses, ground floors. It is near the Lila river.” As he pointed out there are currently no reports of damage to buildings.
Papadopoulos in SKAI: The earthquake is not related to the earthquake in Nea Styra – The area has also experienced a larger earthquake
Speaking to SKAI, Professor Gerasimos Papadopoulos spoke about a new focus but not unknown to seismologists as it had caused an earthquake in the past.
“The earthquake was strongly felt in Evia and Attica. The epicenter is located 9 km east of Psachna Evia. It is an outbreak that is not related to the one that was activated in the area of southern Evia last month in Nea Styra,” said the professor and pointed out that the same area had been activated in 2003 with a magnitude of 5.3.
“The size is important in a new home and close to a large urban center like Chalkida. So I suggest that the earthquake risk assessment committee be established now,” said the professor.
Papazachos: The fault of Psachni can give up to 6 Richter
Caution is needed, but not particular panic, the Professor of Seismology of the AUTH, Kostas Papazachos, said to APE-MPE, regarding the 4.9 Richter earthquake, which occurred at 2:24 in the afternoon, centered in the area of Psachni, in Evia.
Mr. Papazachos emphasized that “it is a well-known area and there is the well-known fault of Psachna. Theoretically, this fault has the potential to produce an earthquake of even six Richter, but so far it has not done so.
On the contrary, until now this fault has moved differently, as for example in 2008 where there were micro-earthquakes for about a year”.
Mr. Papazachos advised the residents “to be careful, to follow the instructions and there is no need for any particular panic”.
“No problems are detected,” said the deputy governor
As the deputy regional governor Giorgos Kelaiditis states to APE-MPE, for now no problems are identified.
Specifically, Mr. Kelaiditis told APE BEE: “It was a very strong earthquake. Currently no problems are detected. I also spoke with residents in the village of Pissonas which is close to the epicenter but there are no problems. The Civil Protection forces have started patrols while the seismic tremors continue.”
