New meeting of the Seismic Risk Committee for Evia: A new strong aftershock cannot be ruled out

by

More than 100 earthquakes with a maximum magnitude of 3.5 in the wider area of Psachna – All Civil Protection forces on heightened alert

Following the strong earthquake of magnitude 4.9 on the Richter scale that occurred yesterday in the area of Psachna, the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Christos Stylianidis, requested again today the convening of the Permanent Special Scientific Committee for Seismic Risk Assessment and Seismic Risk Reduction OASP, in order to examine the newest data concerning the evolution of the phenomenon.

According to the unanimous conclusions of the Commission, the seismic activity so far in the wider area of Psachna includes, in addition to yesterday’s earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale, more than 100 earthquakes with a maximum magnitude of 3.5.

The dimension of the seismic sequence is compatible with the magnitude of the largest earthquake, and the magnitudes of the aftershocks are relatively small, so the possibility of a strong aftershock cannot be ruled out.

All the forces of the Civil Protection, the Fire Brigade, including the EMAK, remain on heightened alert.

Citizens are advised to: (a) avoid entering and staying in buildings that may have suffered damage or have been temporarily designated “Uninhabitable” by the relevant engineering departments and (b) choose safe routes when moving around the city tissue.

It should be noted that overall there is minor damage, while in several cases, mainly in Psachna and the surrounding villages, shop windows have been broken, while small-scale damage has also been done to the community shop in Triada.

Finally, the seismic sequence in the area continues. Seismologists are monitoring the phenomenon, as they stated during yesterday’s meeting, “the fault is known” but without knowing its dimensions. All the civil protection services of both the Mainland Region and the Municipalities, the Police and the Fire Brigade are on heightened alert and continue patrolling
