Pressures for the… first place on the festive table this year received pork from lamb and goat – The prefecture’s butchers “see” an average drop of 20%

A breath from his dethronement, this year the “king” of the festive table, pork, was found, with lamb and goat vigorously claiming their rise to the top.

“We don’t have time to cut lamb and goat,” emphasizes, speaking to APE-MBE, the president of the Butchers’ Association of the Prefecture of Thessaloniki, Nikos Balapanidis, and explains that “at the moment when all meats are experiencing an average weight increase of around 20%, lamb and goats are available this year cheaper than the corresponding period last year, at 9-10 euros/kgfrom 12-13 euros/kg in 2021″.

On the contrary, according to him, consumer interest in turkeythe cost of which is recorded as increased compared to last year by a percentage of perhaps more than 10%with its price starting from 8.5 euros/kg.

The holidays are always a good time for butchers, regardless of the turnover, notes the president of the Butchers’ Association of Thessaloniki prefecture, pointing out that “consumers may buy less meat or ultimately as much as their wallets can handle, but people enter the shops us and re-warms the relationship of trust that we have managed to strengthen in previous years, when the measures that were imposed to avoid the spread of the corona virus, brought us together again. This is an achievement that makes us very happy.”

Regarding the movement, Mr. Balamapanidis points out that the many purchases were made in the days before Christmas and that shortly before the New Year “we have work, but the housewives buy supplements for their festive table”.

According to the president of the butchers, although many traders are talking about a drop in the meat market of perhaps more than 40% during this year’s holidays, however, he himself, from discussions with his colleagues, detects in the prefecture’s market a average drop of 20% compared to the holidays of 2021. “Consumers want to make bigger purchases, but they cannot because of the precision in all goods and services, as a result of the international situation. So their orders and purchases are completely conscious. Now, there are no excesses that we saw in previous years”, says Mr. Balamapanidis.

Regarding meat prices, he notes that consumers can find pork from 6.50 to 7.50 euros/kg (5-6.50 euros in 2021), beef from 11-13 euros/kg (9-11 euros last year), chicken from 4.5 euros and sausage around 7.5 euros.
