Announcement from the Transgender Support Association – Distances from PASOK officials
Reactions, even within PASOK, were caused by Katerina Laspa’s post on social media against transgender people who read fairy tales to children in Thessaloniki.
The Intersex Support Association (S.Y.D.) issued a statement, while other “green” officials condemned the appointment of Katerina Laspa, who is the General Secretary of Volunteering of PASOK-KINAL.
The following is the announcement of the Association:
“The Intersex Support Association (S.Y.D.), a non-governmental organization of a voluntary nature for the promotion of the rights and freedoms of trans, gender-different and LGBTI+ persons in general, strongly protests and denounces the unacceptable, abusive and extreme racist transphobic speech of PASOK’s Secretary General of Volunteering Katerina Laspa”, notes the S.Y.D. in his announcement.
The Association in its announcement then writes: “A few days ago, specifically on December 25, Christmas Day, the organizations: Thessaloniki Pride – Thessaloniki Pride Festival & Rainbow Families, publicly announced an event they co-organized during which Drag Queens read Christmas songs fairy tales for children, in a daycare center in the area of Thessaloniki.
The event – as expected – received a lot of publicity, causing a delirium of hatred mainly from far-right groups, as a result of which the organizations changed the location of the event, in order to protect both the children and parents who had declared participation, and in general the persons who would be in the area.
We are sorry to read that racist delusions did not exist only from the extreme right, but also from executives of political parties of the democratic arc.
In particular, the General Secretary of Volunteering of PASOK – Movement for Change, Katerina Laspa, publicly commented with a dark, intolerant hate speech on the basis of gender expression and identity, through her personal account on Instagram, characterizing as “wretchedness” both the celebratory educational content action, as well as Drag Queens.
“Let everyone do what they want to themselves. No one has the right to casually impose such standards on children,” she added in her post.
The expressions of hatred of the General Secretary of Volunteering of PASOK, are an insult to personality aimed both at the core of the personality of trans and gender diverse persons including Drag Queens, as well as against LGBTQI+ persons in general.
He characterizes it as “wretchedness” with the only reason that in this particular action the children’s Christmas stories were read by Drag Queens.
All of the above are not just stereotypes that PASOK’s General Secretary of Volunteering Katerina Laspa may have, but they have clear racist/transphobic characteristics.
In this direction and in relation to the pervasive climate of intolerant discourse that emanates even from public or political figures, we call on the State to immediately amend the anti-racist legislation, so that not only the public incitement of violence or hatred is criminalized, but in general any form of hate speech, and furthermore to take additional measures when it emanates from public figures.
Also, we call on PASOK-KINAL to proceed immediately with the definitive deletion of Mrs. Laspa, given that the faction’s mission includes the safeguarding of the human/individual rights of all our fellow citizens, including LGBTI+.
Finally, we reserve all our legal rights, as the expressions used by PASOK-KINAL’s Secretary General of Volunteering Katerina Laspa, blatantly insult both the personality of trans people, including drag queens, as well as the LGBTI+ community as a whole .
THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
INTERSEX SUPPORT ASSOCIATION”.
At this particular event there was institutional representation from PASOK – KINAL. The deputy secretary of Human Rights of the party, Yannis Vikas, emphasized that: “homophobia and transphobia have been unequivocally denounced by PASOK throughout time, not in my name the statements of Mrs. Laspa”.
He then added that: “when the abusive speech comes from party officials, the values of Social Democracy, for which we fight so hard, are not expressed in any way, so that stereotypes and discrimination in our societies are dissolved. In this case the procedure followed is one without asterisks.”
At the event, the deputy secretary of Equality of PASOK – KINAL, Vasia Madesi, was present, while for the moment there has been no official reaction from Harilaou Trikoupi.
The Secretary of the Human Rights Sector of PASOK – Movement for Change, Anna Papadopoulou, in her post on Facebook, among other things, stated that “any member who disagrees with the faction’s position, the party’s organs are responsible for judging his actions”.
It is noted that the MP Christos Giannoulis was “present” at the event from the side of SYRIZA-PS.
