What is the case for the 17-year-old who was seriously injured in a traffic accident and is now in the rehabilitation stage

Announcement about case of the 17-year-old Brigadier General who was seriously injured in a traffic accident on Lesbos and is now in the rehabilitation stage, issued the National Transplantation Organisation, in which it clarifies that the possibility of donating his organs was never raised with the family of the 17-year-old by the treating doctors and that the patient, despite craniocerebral injuries he suffered, he never showed signs of brain death and therefore the relevant tests were never carried out to confirm or exclude this.

The EOM announcement follows:

Regarding the untrue publication of the newspaper “Sto Nisi” of Mytilene, which in the last few hours has been reproduced by pan-Hellenic media and social networks, regarding a 17-year-old patient who was hospitalized at M.E.Th. of the Mytilini Hospital with brain injuries and was finally discharged, in order to restore the truth and prevent further damage to the institution of Organ Donation, after communication with the Hospital Administration and the Director of the Medical Center, E.O.M. clarifies that:

The treating doctors never raised the possibility of donating his organs to the 17-year-old’s family.
The patient, despite the craniocerebral injuries he suffered, never showed signs of brain death and therefore the relevant tests were never performed to confirm or exclude this.

All the relevant inaccurate information are irresponsible cases of unauthorized persons, without the mandated journalistic investigation and cross-checking of facts, which deeply insult the scientific competence of the Mytilene Hospital and irreparably damage the idea of Organ Donation.

We call on the decision-makers, specifically the “Sto Nissi” newspaper, to retract and redact the relevant publication immediately. Legislation regarding the imposition of severe criminal penalties for both spreading false news and obstructing organ donation and transplant procedures in any way is clear.
