From early November to May, Pulicat Lake in the state of Tamil Nadu becomes a sanctuary for tens of thousands of flamingos

Every January, Pulicat Lake in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu is home to tens of thousands of flamingos. About 20 flocks of flamingos arrive there in early November and stay until May, turning the 750 square kilometers of wetland into a place to incubate their eggs.

In a series of aerial photographs, photographer Raj Mohan has captured these temporary encampments of the fabled pink birds.

Mohan’s photos were taken during the so-called “annual flamingo festival”, which “promotes tourism in Pulicat and attracts a large number of bird watchers and photographers from various places,” he explained to Peta Pixel.

“Looking at this endless sea of pink because of the tens of thousands of flamingos in the lake was something dreamy. Furthermore, flamingos are social birds and stay in flocks or colonies and, for various reasons, stick together. Their behavioral characteristics are impressive and as you capture them with the lens from above, the movement of the smarmies that give different shapes was nothing short of art,” he told My Modern Met.
