Zakynthos: The announcement of the General Hospital about “Legionella” bacteria

“To date, no patient or employee has been diagnosed with legionella,” the General Hospital claims

Her dangerous bacteria “Legionella” was detected for the first time in the internal water supply system of the clinics of the General Hospital of Zakynthos after a complaint by a patient who was hospitalized a few days ago at the institution.

The verification was made after an inspection carried out by a special crew that recently came from the 6th Health District of Patras.

The news of the detection of the bacterium caused particular concern in her local community Zakynthos. For this reason, the Hospital administration issued the following announcement:

“On the occasion of what was mentioned, regarding the issue of the existence of legionella bacteria in the Hospital’s water supply network, we inform the local community of Zakynthos that after the notification of the results of the sampling IMMEDIATELY the Administration of the Hospital in cooperation with the Commander of the 6th Health Department , Mr. Karvelis, the Hygiene Professor of the Dept. of Medicine of the University of Patras, Mr. Vantarakis, the Nosocomial Infections Committee of the Hospital, the hygienist Mr. Levtakis, Head of the Directorate of Nursing Services, the chemical engineer specialized in the water treatment of nursing units of the private company OSMO, the technicians of the Hospital and the private maintenance company of the Hospital, took the necessary actions in accordance with the existing scientific protocols provided for in these cases.

To date, no case of a patient or worker with Legionella has been diagnosed.

Current water superchlorination conditions, based on the results of the daily measurements made, do not create conditions harmful to the health of patients and workers and effectively treat the legionella bacterium.

Finally, the Administration of the Hospital has planned the final solution to the problem with the application of a modern method of permanent water chlorination, in addition to the existing one, taking into account the quality characteristics of the water with which the Hospital is irrigated by the Municipality”.
