The Sanctification of the waters and the baptism of the Cross in the waters of the Arachthos river, in Northern Tzoumerka, this year acquire a special significance. The religious ceremony will take place after 8 years at the restored historical bridge of Plaka, which once again connects Tzoumerka with Katsanachoria.
On February 1, 2015, Tzoumerkiotes shed tears. Theomenia and the rushing waters of Arachthos swallowed their historical stone bridge of Plaka. For the State, it was a bet to bridge Arachthos again, just as the master craftsman Kostas Bekas designed at the end of the 19th century. With the old technique of stone masons, but with more modern materials, such as for example mortars, with the same DNA of the old one, in February 2020 the bridge was restored. In the following two years, the water consecration ceremony was not carried out, due to the epidemiological conditions.
For the residents of Tzoumerka, this year’s Epiphany is a great celebration. They all meet tomorrow at 11 am at the bridge, just like in the old days.
