Small and medium-sized enterprises – the backbone of the Greek economy – prove that they participate in the national goal set for the promotion of innovation, which is also evidenced by the record number of applications submitted to the Industrial Property Organization (OBI) for the granting of patents.
“The Industrial Property Organization closes 2022 with an important achievement for its history: the achievement of 1,000 applications for a Patent Diploma within a year, twice the number of 2019 and a record for Greece,” according to the announcement of the Organization.
For the first time in such a massive way, “ordinary citizens, scientists and companies transform their new ideas into patents and steadily lead them and Greece to progress and development”, OBI confirms in a related announcement.
What is interesting is that in the last year, in addition to large industries and crafts, there has been participation and attempts to secure patents by small businesses. The increased interest is also related to the simplification of the application process, which is now even more economical compared to other European countries. Hence the fact that OBI now accepts applications from abroad. The range of technological fields is also wide, with RES, medicine and agri-food standing out.
But the effort does not stop here, as the OBI has set the goal of even greater familiarization and information of the public about Intellectual Property Rights “Our effort is to constantly facilitate the daily contact of citizens with the Organization.
With very high levels of expertise and personalized assistance, the now complete electronicization of all deposit procedures as well as the observance of short response times, our goal is a friendly and efficient approach to the users of our services. But mainly, what we are trying to do with our continuous public presence and actions throughout Greece, is to inform the public about Intellectual Property Rights and to cultivate more and more the culture of their protection”, he says in his announcement.
Both the semiotics of this effort and the numbers are of interest. On a symbolic level, it is clear that the patents are an indication that Greek companies are once again showing extroversion and wish to open up to international audiences. In terms of numbers, in 2022 the applications almost doubled compared to 2019 (596), exceeding 1000.
