The images from the excavations in the Thessaloniki Metro, which Attiko Metro SA made public, are impressive.
The route of the Thessaloniki Metro, which crosses its center, follows the axis of the main streets of the urban fabric of the ancient city which was lined with colonnades and arcades and had a 16m wide road surface.

It started from the Golden Gate (Porta Aurea), today’s Vardario Square, and ended at the Kassandriotik Gate, today’s Syntrivani Square.

In the area of ​​these two central gates of the old city, outside of which the richest parts of its cemeteries were developed, the construction works of Metro stations bring to light important antiquities, belonging to different time periods.

These are the stations of Venizelos and Ag. Sophia, which occupy important positions in ancient Thessaloniki.

In Thessaloniki, the largest archaeological excavation ever carried out in Northern Greece is taking place, covering an area of ​​20,000 sq.m.

The archaeological works, with a total budget of 132.6 million euros, have brought to light 130,000 archaeological finds.

Regarding the Venizelos station, the study of the removal and relocation of the antiquities has been approved by the Ministry of Culture and the KAS and the work has already started.
