“The road of water”: The gigantic water supply project of Attica from above – Video

by

The water from Mornos travels for 188 km through a tunnel, and crosses the prefectures of Fokida, Boeotia and Attica, piercing even entire mountains.

Lake Mornos (together with Ylikis) constitutes the aqueduct of Attica and it took more than 10 years to complete the water supply project of the capital.

The reservoir of Mornos was created by the construction of an earthen dam in the bed of the river Mornos, 7 km west of Lidoriki in the Prefecture of Fokidos. The project began in May 1969 and was completed after a decade in 1979, but normal operation began in 1981. The 126-meter-high Morno dam is one of the largest in Europe and consists of an impermeable clay core. Water reaches Athens through the Mornos aqueduct, the second largest aqueduct in Europe.

Up Stories for the first time documents the most impressive part of the “water road” starting outside Delphi and following it all the way to Arachova in a truly highly impressive “blue snake” that even pierces entire mountains.

The water travels for 188km through a tunnel, crosses the prefectures of Phocis, Boeotia and Attica to end up in the water treatment plants located in Acharnai, Galatsi and Mandra and from there into our glass.
