House with erotic frescoes in Pompeii reopens after 20 years of restoration

by

The House of the Vettii, which underwent 20 years of restoration, reopened this Tuesday (10) in the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, in southern Italy.

The space bears the name of its former owners, the brothers Aulo Vettius Conviva and Aulus Vettius Restitutus, two freed slaves, and gained the reputation of being the ‘Sistine Chapel of Pompeii’.

With luxurious decor, the 1,100-square-metre heritage built in the 2nd century BC has rich erotic frescoes on the walls that depict Greek mythology. One of the most famous scenes is that of Priapo, the god of fertility, with his exposed genital organ supported by a scale.

The right destination for tourists, with its colors and images, the house will be open every day of the year after being closed since 2001.
