Two men aged 28 and 59 were arrested by the Coast Guard in Lefkada for stealing fish from aquaculture.
The arrest was preceded by an episodic pursuit with warning shots and dangerous maneuvers at sea.
Specifically, as the Coast Guard states in a related announcement, two citizens, aged 28 and 59, were arrested in the early hours of today by officers of the Lefkada Port Authority.
The officers of the relevant Port Authority, in the context of on-board patrol, detected a suspicious vessel, with two passengers, moving without navigation lights in the sea area “VELA” of Etoloakarnania and approaching aquaculture facilities.
Following discreet surveillance, it was found that the above had stolen fish from a fish cage of the aquaculture in question.
Afterwards and while the above vessel left the scene, a pursuit ensued during which the occupants of the said vessel did not respond to the sound and light signals of the LS-EL.AKT patrol vessel, making dangerous maneuvers.
A warning shot was fired in a safe area, resulting in the immobilization of the vessel and the arrest of its two occupants, while 238 m of nets and fish of the “LAURAKI” species, totaling one hundred and sixty-five kilograms (165 Kg), were located and confiscated.
The above inflatable boat was seized by the relevant Port Authority which is conducting the preliminary investigation, while the seized fish are to be delivered to the above fish farm.
