Earthquake Risk Assessment Committee: What does the report say for Crete, Thebes, Evia – Recommendations for Lesvos

Extremely low risk in Eastern Crete – The data is recorded in Thebes and Evia – Avoid damaged buildings, the recommendation to the citizens of Lesvos

After consultation between the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Christos Stylianides and the President of the OASP and the President of the Permanent Special Scientific Committee for Seismic Risk Assessment and Seismic Risk Reduction of the OASP, Professor Efthymi Lekka, the said Committee met tonight to examine all the latest data concerning the current seismic activity in the country.

According to the unanimous opinion of the members of the Commission:

1. The seismic risk in Eastern Crete is extremely small, according to the data so far.

2. In its regions Thebes and her Evia the newest data are recorded and evaluated, with the aim of more complete monitoring of the seismic sequences.

3. The current seismic activity in the north Lesvos is ongoing and monitored. There is no evidence of activation of adjacent fault zones.

The citizens of Lesvos are advised to: (a) avoid entering and staying in buildings that may have suffered damage or have been temporarily designated “Uninhabitable” by the relevant engineering levels and (b) choose safe routes when moving inside in the urban fabric.

Mr. Stylianidis requested that the Seismic Risk Assessment Committee remain on guard and constantly monitor the developments in order to be convened again if necessary.

All forces of the Civil Protection, the Fire Brigade, including the EMAK, remain on standby.
