The Minister of Tourism pointed out that during his visits to regions of Macedonia, he has found that there are great possibilities for further tourism upgrading

The possibilities that Macedonia has for further tourism development and the initiatives that have been taken to achieve this goal were mentioned by the Minister of Tourism, Vassilis Kikilias, speaking at the 6th Thessaloniki Development Conference.

As he pointed out, the exceptional season of 2022 has given a strong boost to this year’s tourism season, while at the same time important development projects have been launched both by the government and by international giants that come and invest in our country.

“Utilizing all available financial tools (RRF, PDE, NSRF), we are proceeding with important infrastructure projects (ports, marinas, jetties), highlighting our thematic products (snow resorts, mountain refuges, mountain trails, wine tourism, gastronomy, etc.) but also in sustainability projects (solid waste and water resources management, electrification, renewable energy sources, etc.), as sustainable tourism development is a sign for 2023” said Mr. Kikilias, noting that at the same time the campaigns continue throughout the year with the aim of highlighting Greece as an ideal destination for 12-month tourism.

The Minister of Tourism pointed out that during his visits to areas of Macedonia, he has found that there are very great possibilities for further tourism upgrading and has motivated municipalities, regions, port funds and private individuals to take advantage of the available financial tools, participating in these programs, as all these investments will give added value and a significant boost to the region’s tourism product.

In addition, in the context of the tourist development of Macedonia, Mr. Kikilias mentioned that he will carry out familiarization trips to promote the tourist product in Saudi Arabian countries with the aim of having flights from these countries for the first time in 2023.

The effort continues in cooperation with the Region and the airport “Macedonia” for direct flights from the USA that will bring to the city and the wider region high spenders travelers who will significantly strengthen the local economies.

Connectivity is increasing with additional flights (indicative example the increase in Kavala-Athens flights announced this week)

The cruise in the port of Thessaloniki in 2022 was 10 times higher compared to 2019, with a significant increase in homeporting, while in 2023 the performance is expected to be even higher. The promotion of Thessaloniki as an ideal destination for a city break brought tangible results. The campaign will continue this year to further promote urban tourism.
