Traffic regulations and security measures from Sunday at noon in the center of Athens – What the operational plan of the police foresees

From Sunday at noon, the center of Athens, and especially the area around the Syntagma and the Metropolis, will be reminded of a fortress, due to the presence of dignitaries for the funeral of the late King Constantine, which will be held on Monday.
Traffic regulations and security measures will be in place from tomorrow and will peak on Monday morning during the ceremony.
The police have drawn up a special plan for the safety of the 187 guests at the funeral of the former king, while special care is taken to transport the body and the guests from the Metropolis to Tatoi, where the burial will take place in the royal tombs.
The police have chosen the motorcade’s route to be from Katehaki – Attiki street – Varymombi exit. However, according to police sources, two other alternative routes have been put on the table, as a traffic accident or the increased traffic on Katehaki, Attiki road, may change the facts at this particular moment.
DIAS motorcyclists and Immediate Action patrol cars will accompany the procession as dignitaries and “blue bloods” will go to Tatoi to say their last goodbyes to the former King Constantine.
The security measures for the funeral in the Metropolis
Police officers of all specialties will be on foot from tomorrow at noon in the center of the capital, as the first kings and representatives of royal families are expected to arrive at noon on Sunday, who will attend the ceremony, while the hotels that will accommodate the dignitaries.
In the security measures, it was decided to involve the state security as well as the anti-terrorist.
From the early hours of Monday in the center of Athens and mainly around Syntagma Square and the Metropolis where the funeral procession will take place, the police presence will be strong and a marked perimeter made of ribbons will be created, as many citizens are expected to be there.
From 6:00 in the morning when the body will arrive at the chapel of Agios Eleftherios until the end of the funeral procession, drones will fly where they will give a full picture of the operations center while at the same time police officers will be on the roofs of the adjacent buildings.
Dracontea will be the steps after the ceremony where the motorcade to Tatoi will start.

Meeting at the ministry on security measures
An extended meeting, led by the Minister of Citizen Protection Takis Theodorikakos, was held today (January 14, 2023) at noon in the P. Bakoyannis Hall of the Ministry, regarding the order, security and traffic measures that will be taken due to the funeral of the late King Constantine.
The meeting was attended by the Deputy Minister of Citizen Protection, Eleftherios Oikonomou, the General Secretary of Public Order, Michael Karamalakis, the Chief of the Greek Police, Lieutenant General Konstantinos Skoumas and officers from the Services involved in the planning and implementation of the measures.
In this context and taking into account the importance of the event as well as the international interest and the impact on the image of the country, the appropriate instructions and directions were given while the number of police forces and means to be deployed was finalized, in order to ensure the smooth conduct of the ritual.
In more detail, the police forces will be present at key points, focusing on the places where the ceremony will take place in the Metropolis of Athens and in Tatoi, as well as along the route of the procession and in the residences of the officials, while cooperation will be developed with the representatives of the Region of Attica and the Ministry of Culture.
