Especially in the Alps, the snow depth is expected to exceed 2 meters
Ski lovers will see snow in the mountains and in the ski resorts in the coming days as, according to the forecast data of the National Observatory of Athens/meteo.gr, very cold air masses are expected to cover during the new week the Central and West Europeand Northwest Africacausing widespread snowfall.
In places, very high cumulative snow heights (up to over two meters) are expected, especially in the Alps, in the mountains of the Iberian Peninsula and in the mountains of the Western Balkans. The transfer of cold gas masses to the aforementioned areas will begin on Monday 16/01 and will peak during the period Wednesday 18/01 – Saturday 21/01. Indicative of the intensity of the cold invasion is the fact that the air masses will in some places be 10-12 degrees colder than their normal values for the season.
The cause of this atmospheric circulation is located 10 kilometers above the Earth’s surface and has to do with the movement of the air stream. A tornado is a strong current of air at a height of about 10 kilometers from the Earth’s surface moving from west to east. Its movement determines the creation and movement of barometric systems.
In the coming days, the polar storm, heading from Canada to Europe, will be displaced further north from its average climatic position in the Greenland region, then turn sharply south and acquire a trajectory towards Great Britain, the Iberian Peninsula and Northwest Africa, thereby transporting very cold air masses in waves further south.
