Sterilization and vaccination program for stray pets from the Ministry of Health

CPA published today – Shelter standards set – €5m Municipal Funding – Largest ever €5m neutering program and €3m stray pet vaccination program underway

Published today in the Government Gazette Joint Ministerial Decision of the Deputy Minister of the Interior Stelios Petsa and of the competent Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food, Simos Kedikoglou, which determines all matters related to the procedure, the instruments, the necessary supporting documents and every other detail for the licensing of shelters companion animals. Under the authorization of Law 4830/2021 “New framework for the well-being of companion animals – Program “ARGOS”” a coherent, clear and simplified framework of prior authorization for the establishment and operation of shelters for stray animals by municipalities, legal entities of municipalities is established or associations thereof, inter-municipal partnerships, municipal development organizations, animal welfare associations and non-profit animal welfare organizations and natural persons.

At the same time, in order to ensure the observance of strict rules of well-being for the hosted animals, relevant sanctions are defined in case of violations and the competent authorities are defined to control the operation of the shelters for companion animals.

It should be noted that the Joint Ministerial Decision published today is added to the other ministerial decisions that have already been issued in the context of the implementation and effective implementation of the new framework for the well-being of companion animals pursuant to Law 4830/2021.

The Deputy Minister of the Interior, Stelios Petsasstated:

“We said it and we did it, staying true to our commitment to ‘No animal stray – No animal abused.’ We ensure the well-being of stray animals and their living conditions, by defining the criteria and specifications for the proper and legal operation of the shelters, with the assistance of the Local Government. In close cooperation with all co-competent agencies, we are laying solid foundations to ensure the well-being of stray animals.”

It also highlights that for the first time, in addition to funding shelters and feeding costs of veterinary care for companion animals, the largest ever sterilization program is underway
amounting to 5 million euros and the stray pet vaccination program amounting to 3 million euros.
