More patrol vessels to enhance monitoring, control and surveillance of fisheries in the Atlantic and Mediterranean

The vessels, named “Ocean Guardian”, “Ocean Protector” and “Ocean Sentinel” and flying the Portuguese flag, will also carry out other coast guard duties, including maritime surveillance and pollution response.

THE European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA) — the EU body responsible for implementing the highest common standards of control, inspection and surveillance under the Common Fisheries Policy — presented today three new patrol boats, which will strengthen fisheries inspections in European and international waters. These vessels will increase EFCA’s operational capacity in fisheries monitoring, control and surveillance.

THE Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries Mr Virginius Sinkevičius said about it: “These vessels play a key role in enhancing the sustainability of our fisheries and promoting a level playing field for our fishermen. They strengthen the EU’s fisheries inspection tools. The new vessels will make an important contribution to the control of fishing activities in EU waters and beyond, and to the achievement of our objectives.”

The new vessels will be used primarily as fishing patrol vessels in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. The aim is to help EU Member States organize operational coordination activities through EFCA’s various joint instrument development projects in EU sea basins, as well as within some regional fisheries management organisations.

The vessels, named “Ocean Guardian”, “Ocean Protector” and “Ocean Sentinel” and flying the Portuguese flag, will also carry out other coast guard duties, including maritime surveillance and pollution response.
