Unanimous selection decision – Who is the new leader?
The Governmental National Security Council (GNCSC) with its unanimous decision, proceeded to select a new Chief of the Fire Department:
The Deputy General is placed in the position of the Chief of the Fire Department Georgios Pournaras.
To the outgoing Chief, Lt.-Gen Alexios Rapanos, who is promoted to the rank of retired General, is awarded the title of honorary Fire Chief.
The new chief of the Fire Department was born in 1965 in Kalamata, Messinia Prefecture.
He is married and the father of three children.
He joined the Fire Brigade in 1991 and graduated from the Fire Academy Officer School in 1998 with the rank of Fire Arrester.
He served as Coordinator of Operations for the Peloponnese, Western Greece, Ionian Islands (Zakynthos, Kefalonia and Ithaca islands) based in Patras, as Head of the Operations Branch of the Headquarters of the Greek Army, as Commander of the 1st EMAK, as Deputy Commander of the 1st EMAK, as Commander of the 6th EMAK Athens, as the Commander of the Corinth Fire Brigade, as the Director of the Staff Support Directorate at the former Ministry of Public Order and Citizen Protection, as the Director of the Fire-Rescue Directorate of the Fire Brigade Headquarters, as the Dean of the Fire Academy, an operational officer at the 1st EMAK and as the Deputy Commander of the Fire Department of Limnos.
He is a graduate of the Department of Political Science and International Studies of Panteion University and the lower school of the Air Force.
He holds a diploma from the KEOACH Rescue School of the GES of the Special Forces Directorate, a diploma from the US Department of State, in dealing with CBRN (chemical-biological-radiological-nuclear) threats, a diploma in crisis management, the Croatian Ministry of Emergencies, a diploma in crisis management from INEP, the Ministry of the Interior , adult trainer degree, KEMEA, certified adult trainer in EOPPEP.
He speaks English and French very well and knows Spanish.
During his tenure, he has participated in international exercises as liaison officer and expert in the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (EUROSOT 2005, EUTACOM – SEE 2006, TWIST 2013, CURIEX 2013, MOD-TTX 2015, MODEX 2018, etc.). at CTIF conferences, as a PA representative, at Fire 5 schools in Spain and at a training seminar in Canada on the subject of forest fires.
He is an expert in dealing with CBRN threats, trained in the USA, Canada and Germany, he is a team leader in the Greek team of the Fire Brigade (modules) MUSAR 1 ATH that Greece has declared to the EU Civil Protection Mechanism for issues of disasters and registered in the EU Civil Protection Expert register in matters of mass disasters.
He is a personal trainer of Security Forces and Armed Forces in dealing with CBRN threats as well as in many schools of the PS and ELAS on CBRN threats.
He has taught for a number of years at the Fire and Police Academy.
He has managed and coordinated numerous firefighting operations in dealing with Natural and Man-made disasters such as: Attiki earthquake 1999, avalanche on Mount Mainalos-Arcadia, HELIOS plane crash, Kalamos forest fire 2017, Kinettas forest fire. floods in Mandra Attica, forest fires in Kalamos N. Attica, forest fires in N. Ilia, Achaia, Corinthia, Laconia 2021 etc.
During his professional career, he was promoted to all ranks of the highest officer by choice, received many moral awards, and was awarded all medals, decorations and commemorations, including the highest Brigadier General of Honor, the highest Brigadier General of the Phoenix, Firemen’s Merit 1st Class, the Star of Merit and Honor and the Merit and Honor 1st Class.
