A total of 24 vehicles were “buried” in the seabed after the deadly storm

New data emerged with the recovery of vehicles from the bottom of Agia Pelagia and Lygaria, after the deadly flood of last October, which dragged them into the sea.

Two “new” cars, which their owners were looking for for three months, were found in the sea in Lygaria, at a depth of 25 meters, and at a great distance from the beach.

The vehicles, which have been completely destroyed, were spotted by private divers who belong to the company with which the municipality of Malevizio has signed a contract of 65,000 euros for the cleaning of all the beaches of the municipality.

The cars must now be pulled from the bottom of the sea “either with the use of a tow truck or with special balloons”, the deputy mayor of Technical Works in the municipality of Malevizio, Mr. Giorgos Petousis, explains to cretalive.

What will happen to the compensations?

Initially there was information that, according to the law, the residents of the houses that were destroyed are entitled to compensation – both for the houses and for the household goods – as well as for the rental and commercial vehicles.

“For the remaining, approximately ten, IX vehicles, the municipality has initiated all the procedures and we will exceptionally request compensation because the special insurances do not cover them and we have to stand by these people”.

It is also noted that on Wednesday (18/1) the mayor of Malevizio Menelaos Bokeas was in Athens to examine ways in cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior to find the formula to unblock the compensation procedures.

A total of 24 vehicles were found at the bottom of the sea.

To date there has been a lift 22 vehicles (the two new ones that were found have not yet been raised) from the beaches of Malevizio, specifically:

  • 17 from Agia Pelagia
  • 4 from Lygaria and
  • 1 from Paleokastro
