The improving character of teacher evaluation and its importance in the offered educational process is emphasized by the Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, Niki Kerameos, in an interview she gave to APE-MPE, on the occasion of the beginning of the process from next Monday.

“For the first time after 41 years, the individual evaluation of teachers begins horizontally, a key tool for improving our teachers, the supplies we offer to our children, education as a whole,” said Ms. Kerameos and added that the specific tool “has been used for several years in the majority of European countries, with a purely improvement objective”.

Regarding the reactions of the educational community to the evaluation, the minister stated that although initially there were reservations, over time “more and more teachers are positive”. “We, for our part, listened to their concerns – e.g. they asked, reasonably, not to be evaluated by a single evaluator for reasons of impartiality, that’s why we provided for three-, while at the same time we took all the measures that ensure the objectivity of the process”, he emphasized.

He also underlined that the ministry and teachers have a common goal: “for our teachers to improve, progress and constantly offer more and better supplies to our children to make their dreams come true”.

As noted, Ms. Kerameos, the evaluation of teachers is one of the three – complementary to each other – evaluation levels in Education: evaluation of educational unit and educational project, evaluation of educational system (“Greek PISA”) and evaluation of teachers. “Evaluation in education has started since 2021 and now the third and last level of evaluation is being activated,” he said.

Regarding the results of the teachers’ evaluation, Ms. Kerameos explained that in cases where the results are positive, the educational work will be recognized and rewarded and the teacher in question receives additional points which he can use for his selection in a position of responsibility. Where performance is deemed unsatisfactory, mandatory training is provided.

Finally, regarding the process, the minister said: “next week, special training sessions will be held for the Directors of Primary and Secondary Education and the new Education Advisors, who are among the evaluators (along with the School Directors), then they will the special platform designed for the evaluation of teachers will be opened and the personal meetings of evaluators and teachers will follow, as well as live observations in the classrooms”.
