Three things never fail at Christmas:
1) The eternal debate about the relevance of raisins in food;
2) The jokes with Simone’s music;
3) The moralistic complaint of those who think that the Christian feast has been distorted into a binge of overeating and consumerism.
This year, I will join the chorus of the discontented. I have nothing against or in favor of raisins. Ditto with Simone. It’s the Christian thing that disgusts me. The vilification, in the middle of Christmas, to what is good in the doctrine of the followers of Jesus. What a thing: just me, atheist and anticlerical.
I opted for atheism, but I grew up in a Christian society and absorbed its heritage through osmosis. I even know some stories from the Bible.
Check it out: right after the official royal Christmas, Joseph and Mary leaked Jesus into Egypt. They had to flee because King Herod, upon learning of the Messiah’s birth, had ordered the killing of all the babies in Judea. It’s in the Gospel of Matthew.
Behold, the abject figure of the biblical Herod reappears in 2021, close to Christmas. The ancient Jewish king has been associated with Marcelo Queiroga, the fourth minister of health in the Bolsonaro government. Queiroga even got a disgraceful nickname on the networks: queirodes.
That’s because Queiroga is deliberately delaying the initiation of vaccination against Covid-19 for children between 5 and 11 years old.
Just as Herod was in command of Rome, the minister follows orders. He tries to gloss over with empty words the president’s unbelievable obsession with imploding all the pillars of civility.
Bolsonaro goes to Mass, appoints a evangelical judge to the STF, puts God in the campaign slogan and socializes with Malafaias and Valdemiros. But the truth that screams is: Bolsonaro uses the name of Jesus to do evil.
Bolsonaro memorizes a psalm or two to recite as he commits mischief and squalor, things so horrible that even the words to describe them are ugly.
Bolsonaro does evil in the name of Jesus, and Queirodes is his accomplice. All Christians who still support his smorgasbord of destruction and death are accomplices.
People who pretend not to see Bolsonaro’s malice, in the hope that he will adopt a retrograde, racist, homophobic, misogynist agenda. They are criminals who eat turkey and belch biblical passages to feign moral rectitude.
What scandalizes them? The video of Bolsonaro dancing funk on a boat. Not because the lyrics are an extract from the vinasse, but because it’s funk.
Bolsonaro had threatened to make a statement on network TV the night of Christmas Eve. I don’t know if you carried out the threat. Hope not. No one deserves the heartbreak of having this individual invaded the house in the middle of the party.
There were people calling for pots for the time of the pronouncement. I hope they thought better of it and gave up. No one deserves mentally busying themselves with Bolsonaro at Christmas. Don’t let the Grinch of Rio das Pedras spoil your supper.
So it’s Christmas, and I’ve delivered this text in advance so I can fill the pots with good food. And mind with worthwhile people. Merry Christmas.
