Meeting in Civil Protection for bad weather: Activation of 112 depending on the course of the phenomena

Worsening weather with heavy rain and storms, snowfall, gusty winds and dropping temperatures from today through Friday – State apparatus on full alert

Meeting for the evaluation of the meteorological data concerning the upcoming bad weather was held today at Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, under the Minister, Christos Stylianides.

The Minister, Mr. Stylianides, underlined that the entire civil protection mechanism is already on high alert in order to deal immediately with any problems that arise due to the upcoming dangerous weather phenomena.

It was decided to activate 112 for sending warning messages to residents depending on the evolution of the phenomena in specific areas.

The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Minister, Evangelos Tournas, the General Secretary of Civil Protection, Vasilios Papageorgiou, the Chief of the Fire Brigade Lieutenant General, Georgios Pournaras, the Chief of Staff of the Corps, Lieutenant General Christos Lambris, the Commander of the National Coordination Center for Operations and Crisis Management (ESKEDIK), Major General Theodoros Vagias, the Head of the Class Branch of the Hellenic Police Headquarters Major General Eleftherios Garilas, the Director of Planning and Emergency Response of the Greek Police, Dimitrios Alexandris, as well as the scientific team of meteorologists and hydrologists.

The General Secretariat of Civil Protection and ESKEDIK have already informed the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and all the competent government agencies involved, the regions and municipalities of the country as well as all the concessionaires of the country’s highways so that they are on full alert.

At the same time, the General Secretariat of Civil Protection issues a strong recommendation to citizens (in addition to the instructions of 112) to be very careful, to limit their movements to the absolutely necessary in the areas where dangerous weather phenomena are expected and to take all the necessary self-protection measures in accordance with instructions of the GMP.

It is recalled that according to the updated Emergency Bulletin of Dangerous Weather Phenomena issued today by the National Meteorological Service (EMY), the weather is expected to worsen with heavy rains and storms, snowfall, gale force winds and a drop in temperature from today until Friday (27- 01-2023).

More detail:

Today Wednesday (25-01-2023)

1. Heavy rains and storms are predicted in the Ionian Islands (mainly in Zakynthos, Kefallonia, Lefkada and Ithaca), in the northwestern Peloponnese, in western Sterea and gradually in Epirus.

2. Snowfall will occur in the continental highlands and semi-mountains, which from early evening will be dense in places:

– in western Macedonia

– in Epirus (indicative altitude of 500 meters and above)

– in the western parts of central Macedonia and in the western and northern parts of Thessaly (indicative altitude 600-700 meters and above)

– in western and central Sterea (indicative altitude of 600-700 meters and above).

3. Southerly winds will locally reach the Ionian at 8 and possibly temporarily 9 Beaufort.

Tomorrow Thursday (26-01-2023)

1. Heavy rains and storms are forecast:

– until noon in the Ionian Islands, Epirus, western Sterea and western Peloponnese

– from the morning hours in the eastern Peloponnese and gradually in central Sterea and Thessaly with weakening from the afternoon

– from the midday hours in eastern Sterea (including Attica), Evia and the Sporades with weakening in the evening

– from the afternoon in the Cyclades and in central and eastern Macedonia

– from early evening in Thrace and the islands of the eastern Aegean.

2. Snowfall will occur in the continental highlands and semi-mountains and locally in areas in the north with a relatively lower altitude which will be dense in places:

– in western Macedonia, central Macedonia and Epirus (with an indicative altitude of 400-500 meters and above)

– in Thessaly (with an indicative altitude of 500-600 meters and above)

– in the western and central Sterea (with an indicative altitude of 700-800 meters and above)

– from early evening in eastern Macedonia and Thrace (indicative altitude 400-500 meters and above).

3. The southerly winds in the Aegean will gradually strengthen to 8 and locally to 9 Beaufort.

On Friday (27-01-2023)

1. Heavy rains and storms are forecast until the morning hours in Thrace and the eastern Cyclades and until midday in the eastern Aegean islands and the Dodecanese.

2. Snowfall will occur in the continental mountainous-semi-mountainous areas, which will be dense in places in Thrace (indicative altitude of 500-600 meters and above) until the morning hours.

3. The winds will locally reach the eastern Aegean at 8 to 9 Beaufort in the morning hours.
