The return of Carnival after two years without revelry due to the pandemic will be wide open in the mottos of the main characters of the party in Pernambuco. Galo da Madrugada, in Recife, and the feast of
Olinda will allude to the resumption in the 2023 parades.

With the famous slopes of the historic site, the city of Olinda announced the holiday schedule with names like Alceu Valença and Elba Ramalho, in addition to dozens of block parades.

The city hall is also preparing a special decoration for the access points to the city and to the poles of the Carnival party. The intention, according to organizers, is that the business card for the local public and for tourists be encouraging in the resumption of revelry.

Seasonal home rentals reach R$17,000 per night in Olinda, but there are more affordable options for those traveling in a group to the city. Advertiser Géssica Lima, 32, says that she will be traveling with six friends and that she booked her stay through an internet platform.

“We’re leaving Belo Horizonte on the 16th and won’t be back until Ash Wednesday. We got a package for R$5,000 and, sharing [com os amigos]it came out cheaper than in many hotels”, he says.

In the city of Recife, hotel occupancy should be above 90%, according to an estimate by the Brazilian Association of the Hotel Industry in Pernambuco.

In the capital, Galo da Madrugada prepares a novelty in the main allegory, kept under lock and key — the mystery should be unraveled in the coming days. The organization estimates that it will spend more than R$ 6 million to put the block on the street.

The honorees of the Recife Carnival in 2023 will be the singer Geraldo Azevedo, the dancer Zenaide Bezerra and the president of Maracatu Estrela Brilhante, Dona Marivalda.

In Olinda, in addition to a space for frevo, Carnival will have a night dedicated to brega on a stage set up in Praça do Carmo. Illustrious personality, the Midnight Man, who parades at midnight on Saturday
for Carnival Sunday in the Bonsucesso neighborhood, it will honor eight representatives of the local revelry.

Professor of history at the Catholic University of Pernambuco, Lídia Rafaela Santos believes that, in 2023, Carnival may show sharper political and social criticism due to the change of government at the federal level and economic difficulties.

“The moments of deep uncertainty and renewal will be reflected in the party. What we have seen in recent years are groups reaffirming themselves politically against the attitudes of the last government”, he says.

In addition to the preparation of blocks, jokes, dancers and giant dolls, the revelers also organize themselves. For this year’s return, costume designer Paulo Medeiros says there will be a mixture of tradition and novelties.

“We will have a lot of new things and allusions to what people went through. There will be clothes with a lot of shine, metals, contrasting colors, along with other pieces that can be used on a daily basis, after Carnival”, he says.
