New meeting for the evaluation of the meteorological data concerning the developing bad weather was held today at Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protectionunder the Minister, Christos Stylianides.

The Minister, Mr. Stylianidis, underlined that the entire civil protection mechanism remains on high alert in order to deal immediately with any problems that arise due to the dangerous weather phenomena.

The activation of 112 to send warning messages to residents continues depending on the evolution of phenomena in specific areas.

The General Secretariat of Civil Protection and ESKEDIK have already informed the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and all the competent government agencies involved, the regions and municipalities of the country as well as all the concessionaires of the country’s highways to remain on full alert. They are also in constant contact with the Operations Center of the Hellenic Police in order to keep the citizens informed about any problems in the road network.

At the same time, the General Secretariat of Civil Protection reiterates the strong recommendation to citizens (in addition to the instructions of 112) to be very careful, to limit their movements to the absolutely necessary in the areas where dangerous weather phenomena develop and to take all the necessary self-protection measures according to with the instructions of the General Directorate of Public Health.

The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Minister, Evangelos Tournas, the General Secretary of Civil Protection, Vasilios Papageorgiou, the Chief of the Fire Brigade Lieutenant General, Georgios Pournaras, the Deputy Chief of the Fire Brigade Lieutenant General Marios Apostolidis, the Chief of Staff of the Corps, Lieutenant General Christos Lambris, Commander of the National Coordination Center for Operations and Crisis Management (ESKEDIK), Major General Theodoros Vagias, the Head of the Order Branch of the Hellenic Police Headquarters Major General Eleftherios Garilas, the Director of Planning and Emergency Response of the General Directorate of the Greek Police, Dimitrios Alexandris, as well as the scientific team of meteorologists and hydrologists.

It is recalled that according to the updated Emergency Bulletin of Dangerous Weather Phenomena issued today by the National Meteorological Service (EMY), it is predicted that the phenomena will continue with heavy rains and storms, snowfall, gale force winds and a drop in temperature will continue until Friday (27- 01-2023).

On Thursday (26-01-2023)

1. Heavy rains and storms are forecast:

– until noon in the southernmost islands of the Ionian and the western Peloponnese

– in eastern Peloponnese, in central and eastern Sterea (including Attica), Evia, Thessaly and Sporades with weakening from the afternoon in central Sterea and Thessaly and from the evening hours in the rest of the areas.

– from noon in the Cyclades and in central and eastern Macedonia, with weakening in the evening hours initially in central and gradually in eastern Macedonia.

– from late afternoon in Thrace and the islands of the northern Aegean.

– from the evening in the eastern Aegean islands and at night in the Dodecanese.

2. Snowfall will occur in the continental highlands and semi-mountains and locally in areas in the north with a relatively lower altitude which will be dense in places:

– in western Macedonia and Epirus (with an indicative altitude of 500-600 meters and above).

– in Thessaly (with an indicative altitude of 600-700 meters and above).

– in the western and central Sterea (with an indicative altitude of 800-900 meters and above).

– from noon in central and eastern Macedonia and Thrace (indicative altitude of 500-600 meters and above).

3. The southerly winds in the Aegean will gradually strengthen to 8 and locally to 9 Beaufort.

On Friday (27-01-2023)

1. Heavy rain and storms are forecast until the early morning hours in Thrace, the northern Aegean islands and the eastern Cyclades, until the morning hours in the eastern Aegean islands and until noon in the Dodecanese.

2. Snowfall will occur in the continental mountainous-semi-mountainous areas, which will be dense in places in Thrace (indicative altitude of 500-600 meters and above) until the early hours of the morning.

3. Southerly winds will locally reach the southeast Aegean at 8 to 9 Beaufort in the morning hours.
