The snow cover has now increased significantly in the mountains of mainland Greece, according to the meteo of the Observatory
Winter sports fans can take heart. After the extremely limited snow cover for the season in our country during December 2022 and the first half of January, the snowfalls in the last two weeks of this month brought the extent of snow cover in Greece back to approximately the average of the period 2004-2022, according to with the National Observatory of Athens/meteo.gr.
In the mountains of Western Greece and Western Thessaly, the height of the snow on Friday already exceeded one meter above 1,500 meters altitude, as the images from the European satellite Sentinel-2 show.
Indicatively, in the video above edited by the METEO unit of the E.A.A, the progress of the snow cover in the X/K of Kaimaktsalan is shown through the weather camera of meteolive.gr during the time period 4 to 27 January 2023.
The winter tourism of our country has been particularly affected by the limited snow cover so far this winter, with the result that few ski resorts are in operation.
