by

Research is now focused on two points where the depth is however great since it exceeds 800 to 1,000 meters – Oceanography is also expected in the area

For the second night in a row, floating vessels of the port, aerial vehicles and private individuals are continuing the search for the 31-year-old squadron leader Stathis Tsitlakidis, captain of the fatal Phantom that crashed yesterday morning in the sea area of Andravida while performing a training flight.

The searches are being carried out 8-10 nautical miles from Katakolo, however, since the morning, difficult weather conditions have prevailed, while at the moment strong winds are blowing which make the work of the rescue crews difficult. According to the report by Christos Stratoulakos, floating robots and divers have also been thrown into the battle. Surveys have already been carried out to a certain point of the seabed, with the result that areas have been excluded in which nothing significant has been detected.

The research now focuses on two points where the depth is great and surpasses the 800 to 1,000 meters. For this reason, the oceanographic vessel “Nautilus” is expected to arrive, which has better equipment to be able to locate the rest of the aircraft. At the same time, during the day, searches were carried out in coastal areas from Katakolo to Pyrgos Ilia without any results.

According to the estimates so far, it is possible that the 31-year-old captain Efstathios Tsitlakidis was tied to his seat and did not even have time to react.

What are low flying exercises?

It is recalled that the Phantom went down while the two pilots were flying low. According to the SKAI report in the main news bulletin, these are exercises where the fighters fly at a very low altitude, almost above the surface of the sea. At low altitudes, fighters are detected very slowly by radar or may not be detected at all as they become almost invisible. In this way they can bypass enemy air defenses and reach their target undetected.
