Bartholomeus: The Church has never been a closed club for the rich

The Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew officiated at the Divine Liturgy, today, a day in which the memory of Saint Tryphon, patron of gardeners, vintners and farmers in general, is commemorated, in I.N. Nativity of the Mother of God, Belgrade Gate, in the City.

At the end of the Divine Liturgy, His Holiness blessed the huts in memory of the Saint and M. Archimandrite Agathangelos, Archivist of the Patriarchate, read the exorcism of Saint Tryphon which is read, on his feast day, in gardens and crops.

The divine word was preached by Deacon Bosporios, Undersecretary of the Holy and Holy Synod.

His Holiness noted in his speech:

“Today, in a solemn liturgical gathering, we prayed here in the Community of Our Lady of Belgrade all together for the peace of the universe, which has been so severely tested due to the hideous war of the Russian Federation against the heroically fighting Ukraine, for almost a year, but also for the stability of the Holy Churches of God, which has recently been shaken due to the flagrantly anti-canonical and profoundly anti-ecclesiastical actions of the Moscow Patriarchate. Above all, however, we prayed for the man. Of every man, unique before God.

Because every human being before God is an unrepeatable personality with a particularly unique value. This is also the message of today’s feast day of the Holy Glorious Martyr Tryphonos, the patron of farmers, vintners, gardeners and all those who in general deal with the cultivation of the land. The Church has never been a closed club for the rich and a social gathering place for the socially high-ranking. On the contrary, he is interested in the salvation of every person, without discrimination».

At another point in his speech, the Ecumenical Patriarch, on the occasion of the feast of Saint Tryphon, recalled the constant call of the Mother Church of Constantinople for the protection of the natural environment, and noted that this call, especially today, “is also accompanied by the our fervent prayer in favor of His Eminence, Metropolitan of Pergamum, Mr. Ioannou, who is severely tested on his bed of illness.”

“St. Pergamum, the greatest Orthodox theologian of the 20th century and up to the present day, and according to His Holiness Pope Francis the greatest theologian of Christianity as a whole, was the main exponent of eucharistic ecclesiology and the founder of theological ecology and stamped with his theological thought the testimony and the struggle of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in favor of the protection of the building. The great brother Hierarchis was a contemporaneous member of the ancient Moderation and took the lead in all the important events of our humble Patriarchy, with the highlight being his participation in the work of the Holy and Great Synod of the Orthodox Church as a prominent member of the ancient Patriarchal Delegation and first advisor to its President Session.

A few days ago we had the opportunity to contact him by phone and convey our love and wishes for a speedy recovery. Today, from here, from Our Lady of Belgrade and before all of you, as well as the beloved disciple of Saint Silivrias, we take the opportunity to express to Saint Pergamon the immense gratitude and respect of the Holy Church of Christ the Great and of us personally for all what they sacrificially offered to Her, together with our heartfelt wishes for his strengthening from above, the intercession of the Holy Martyr Tryphonos, in the trial he is experiencing».

In the afternoon, His Holiness officiated at the Pansepto Patriarchal Church during M. Vespers for the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord.
