ACEA predicts that around 9.8 million new cars will be sold across Europe this year, an increase of 5% from 2022
This year for motoring can be characterized as pivotal, as most car manufacturers believe that the recovery will begin very soon, after two difficult years.
The situation on the production lines is gradually improving and we will soon see a shorter wait. THE ACEA predicts that around 9.8 million new cars will be sold across Europe this year, up 5% from 2022. But this figure remains 25% below pre-crisis levels in 2019.
In this context, it is even more important for car manufacturers to strengthen their positions on the world stage. E-mobility may create opportunities, but it also increases competition. China is ready to enter the European market with many electric cars, while having the advantage of raw materials for the manufacture of batteries, but also the corresponding know-how, since several dozen models of the remaining manufacturers are manufactured there.
“Our industry has long had a competitive advantage across the combustion engine value chain. But this is no longer the case with electric vehicles. At least now. Our competitors have many aces up their sleeve that we don’t yet have, and they also have support from national and local authorities. In fact, it is still growing in China and the US, says the president of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) and CEO of Renault Group, Luca de Meo.
The new Euro 7 emission standards, for example, impose “unrealistic restrictions on industry and will even slow down the drive to decarbonise. Euro 7 compliance brought cost increases that could deter customers from buying these new cars,” warned Luca de Meo.
Also, the issue is what will happen to all the old cars on European roads today, which are of older technology and pollute to a great extent. Perhaps the bet in this case is at this very point, where a series of incentives should be given to be able to renew the fleets of European countries.
