Bitter cold and snow even in the Attica bad weather is expected to bring “Barbara” which is approaching our country and is expected to start making its presence felt from Sunday until the beginning of next week.

The National Meteorological Service issued at noon on Friday (02/03/2023) an emergency bulletin of dangerous weather phenomena for the bad weather “Barbara” that is coming in the coming days with Attica being among the areas that will see a “white day”. Specifically, in Attica snowfalls are expected to occur according to the EMY from Sunday initially in the east and the north, which from the midday hours will extend to most of the prefecture, while from the afternoon they will intensify and it will snow in lowland areas as well. Snowfall will show a temporary lull overnight. However from on monday morning the snowfall will intensify again throughout the county.

“Cold air masses from northern Europe will move further south and cause bad weather with the name “BARBARA” in our country from Sunday (02/05/2023). The main characteristics will be the low temperatures, the strong frost, the heavy snowfalls in places even in lowland areas of eastern Greece, as well as the stormy northerly winds of intensity 8 to 9 Beaufort in the seas” states the EMY press release in detail. At the same time, according to the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr a temperature drop of even 10 degrees Celsius is expected which will start gradually from the evening hours of Saturday from North to South.

In detail, where and when it will snow

According to EMY, on Sunday (05/02/2023) they will be affected by snowfall

1. From the early hours of the morning the islands of the northern Aegean and until noon Thrace and Halkidiki.

2. Before midday the snowfall will spread further south, intensify and affect the Sporades, the eastern parts of Thessaly, Evia and eastern Sterea, especially Boeotia and Attica. Snowfall will occur even in the lowlands of these areas.

3. From the afternoon, snow will fall in the mountains – semi-mountains mainly of the central and northern Cyclades as well as Crete. In Crete, the snowfall will be heavy at times.

4. Snow storms will occur mainly over the sea and coastal areas of the Aegean.

On Monday (02/06/2023) at times heavy snowfall will continue to occur on the northern Aegean islands, the Sporades, Evia, eastern Sterea, the Cyclades and Crete.

Especially for Attica, snowfall will occur from Sunday (05/02/2023) initially in the east and the north, which from the midday hours will extend to most of the prefecture, while from the afternoon it will intensify and it will snow in lowland areas as well . Snowfall will show a temporary lull overnight. However, from Monday morning the snowfall will intensify again throughout the prefecture.

On Tuesday (02/07/2023) snowfall is expected to continue in eastern Greece from Thessaly and further south (windy areas) as well as in the Cyclades and Crete, but with less intensity.

The mercury plummeted

At the same time, a gradual drop in temperature from north to south is expected from Sunday, around 8 to 10 points. This will result in the prevalence of severe frost mainly in the continental areas, which will be total in places in the central and northern areas (negative temperatures throughout the day).

Stormy Winds

From Sunday (02/05/2023) at noon, stormy north-northeast winds of intensity 8 to 9 Beaufort will blow on the seas, which from Sunday afternoon in the Ionian and from Tuesday (02/07/2023) in the Aegean, gradually they will weaken.

What is the cause of the severe weather?

The reason for this change in weather according to the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr. will be the atmospheric circulation over Europe in the coming days, which will be characterized by the development of a high pressure field that will extend from Northwest Africa to Scandinavia.

Combined with the low pressures in Eastern and Southeastern Europe, it will allow the transfer of cold gas masses to the Balkans and our country.

At the same time, the specific arrangement of the atmospheric circulation will be characterized by the movement of micro-disturbances in the upper troposphere from the northeast towards our country, which will contribute to the occurrence of significant snowfalls in the east and south of the country.

The instructions from the General Secretariat of Civil Protection

For the snowfall

If you live in a mountainous or inaccessible area which faces problems from snowfall

-Supply heating material and food for several days.

-Provide snow removal equipment (eg shovels).

-During snowfall or blizzard

If you are at home

-Keep it warm and stay in it as long as you can.

– Do not let children go out unaccompanied.

-Wear appropriate clothing and shoes.

-Check the water supply network, the pipes and the glass panel of the solar water heater.

If you are in the car

-Avoid driving in difficult mountainous areas.

-Change course if you are on a difficult road and there is heavy snowfall.

– Keep a safe distance from the vehicles in front.

-Stay in the car if it stops. Place a brightly colored cloth on the radio antenna or in another prominent place so that rescue teams can spot you. Run the engine for 10 minutes every hour and keep the exhaust clear of snow.

If you are outdoors

-Go to a safe place without being exposed to the blizzard.

-Dress in several layers of light and warm clothing instead of a heavy garment and wear warm waterproof boots. Prefer a waterproof outer garment.

-Be careful when traveling in areas where snowfall is predicted.

-Use snow chains if it is absolutely necessary to travel by car. It is preferable to travel during the day using main roads. Inform your loved ones about the route you will follow.

-Prefer public transport for moving around the city.

Frost

In areas where frost has formed caution is required when driving. Be aware of road conditions and have snow chains.

If you move on footwear suitable shoes to avoid injuries due to slippage.

In residential water supply networks

-Find out where the water meter (clock) of your house is located as well as where the central and peripheral water supply switches are located.
Check and make sure the water mains switches turn on and off and operate smoothly.

-Make sure external pipes (eg solar water heater, balcony taps) are insulated, otherwise get them insulated as soon as possible.

– Isolate or better drain the solar water heater network if you are going to be away for a long time during the winter. Set your home heating system to automatically operate at low temperatures.

-Shut off the water supply to the solar water heater and drain the water from the system if you are at home during frost and especially at night.

-Don’t waste water recklessly to remove snow and ice.

-Limit activities that require increased water consumption (washing machines, etc.).

-Find out if antifreeze has been installed in the solar water heater by the manufacturer or installation specialist, in case of a closed circuit. If not, get the appropriate antifreeze and take care of its placement.

-Check for leaks in faucets or cisterns.

-Make sure gutters on balconies and roofs are clear of leaves and debris and are working smoothly.

When there is frost

If the central water pipes freeze

-Immediately close the main water supply switch of the house and check the water meter.

-If it continues to work (“writes”) then there is a leak in the network. Turn off the central supply switch and call a plumber.

If you decide to thaw the pipes, start from the part of the tube near the switch so that the temperature change is gradual. If you have no results contact a plumber.

Check if electrical installations are wet or at risk to isolate them.
